Strange problem/time for upgrade
I have a 2010 Ultra with stock head unit, hogtunes 40/4 amp. Hogtunes speakers front and back. What I have going on, and not all the time, is when I turn up the radio it is like the amp is backing down some. Sometimes (more then not) it is louder then other times. The times it is acting up it is like when I am advancing volume it will get a bar or two louder as I am turning it up and then back off once I let go of volume. It seems the most when it is warm/hot out but not all the time. I am assuming my amp is going out or getting bad....so what I am thinking is upgradeing. I am going to stick with my head unit for now since it seems to be fine and does all I want. If and when I upgrade that it will probably be with Aquatics...I like the amount of sound my amp puts out but if I am going to replace it mise as well go with a little more. I want a little better sound quality then what I have but don't want to break the bank. I want to stick with fairing speakers and trunk speakers only. Not going to add to lids or lowers. So what recommendations for an amp and speakers? And how big of speaker can I put in my fairing without to much modifications?
Thanks for reading and any responces

Let me clarify a little, the bars on the radio don't back off, it is just you can tell it is louder sound wise and then backs off a little if that isn't to confusing. And it only does it as I am at the upper end of the sound level not at anything below 1/2 volume. I thought about trying to post a video of it but two things, I cant seem to get it to do it in the garage (go figure) and at the upper end of the volume the video's sound like crap off my phone so wouldn't help anyhow.
I have had this problem on and off for about 6 months or so. I looked everything over when it first started happening with no avail and then a month ago I upgraded bars and painted inner fairing so I really went thru everything with a fine tooth comb and still didn't see anything wire wise. Good connections thoughout and good grounds.
Not being an expert on Hogtunes amps, but could it possibly be going into a "protect" mode? I had an Alpine PDX amp that when pushed too hard, would automatically back down the power, hence the "protect" mode.
You might just be pushing it too hard, and/or it's getting too hot.
