Default Looking for a New Setup System for 18 SGS

Hey guys,

So I am starting my research for the dreaded stereo sound system upgrade. I have a 2018 SGS with the stock Boom Audio Stage 1 Front fairing 2 speaker set up ONLY. For NOW i am only looking to upgrade these two speakers in the front fairing with an amp. Next year I WILL add speaker lids so this needs to be a part of the discussion but is not happening at this time.

I am one of the ones who has a friend with a brand new 2018 Road Glide with Stage 2 Boom Audio Front and speaker lids and the thing sounds really good and he has not had any issues. I have only really looked at the Boom! Audio stage 2 updgrade or the Rockford Fosgate systems to this point. Im not interested in Kicker or J&M so are there any other systems I need to be looking at?

I understand that "BASS" is something of a relative term. Some people who say i want bass actually need a woofer somewhere to get what they want, when I say bass i mean I want some lows in my sound as well.. All of the sound systems I have heard seem to be all highs and mids except for the BOOM stage 2. Although everyone bashes the boom 2 it is the only one I have heard that sounds like it has any lows at all and I mean just depth throughout the sound.. I dont need bass shaking sound... just something to round out the sound... if that makes sense?? Im no engineer so I dont know the terminology..

If money is no object what would be the dream setup?
If I am trying to keep it under 1k what would be the setup?

thanks for the help.

First if you are going to keep the boom head unit, you will need a bt355 line leveler to flatten out the harsh eq curve that the boom hu puts out. With an amp, the signal distorts without the line leveler. Next, get yourself a good 4 channel amp as that is the heart and sole of the setup. If listening to fm is a must then some amps are out of the question as an amp will interfere with fm reception.

As far as speakers go, I suggest you find some bike shows/gatherings and listen to different set ups. Speakers are personal preference and so many combos out there from coax, components and pro audio that it will make your head swim. Find a setup you like ask the gurus here if it is viable and go from there.

Yes; Keeping the Boom Head Unit
Yes; I was thinking of the 4 channel Amp
No; Dont care about FM radio - I listen to Bluetooth throught phone and will prob put XM in sooner or later but no analog radio.

As far as bike shows/gatherings.... well there is the issues.. Im in KY and well there just arent many big shows, vendor shows, get togethers anywhere near here.... 5 hours plus are really the closest to any big events and even those do not mean any big sound competitions or companies demo their equipment.. This is where I am stuck.. The only speakers I have heard are the boom 2 bc thats what ppl have on their bikes around here bc we dont have many options to hear and choose from.

There are different thought to a good set up on a scooter. Top tier is pro audio and produce the best over all sound but can be a challenge installing the different dedicated speakers. Components are next but installing the tweeters can also be challenging for the not so mechanically inclined. Coax are direct stock replacement speakers and best for the average joe like me. Some coax/amp combos can produce damn good sounds.

Keep in mind that 6.5 speakers wont produce much bass even with an amp. The bass will come from 6x9's you put in your lids. I am running the RF tsm69bl14 rear speaker kit and really like it. It includes everything needed for 6x9's in the lids including all wiring and no need to have anything painted. Even the speakers sound good but with that kit, you can run just about any 6x9 speaker.

As far as amps go, a good warm 4 channel amp is what you are looking for. JL xd series, rf tm400x4ad and stinger spx 700x4 are all good, warm easy to tune amps. A decent budget amp is the ss pn4.1000d amp but fm is questionable on it and more of a challenge to install. The focal sport is also a damn good amp but it is a beast with power and not as easy to tune.

6.5 speakers are very personal preference. Some one I have run and like are, hertz hcx 165, infinity kappas, sony xs-gs 1621 or 1720's. Focal k series and arc 602 motos are also good but a bit $$.

Again these are just my thoughts as others may or may not agree but this is a start.
