So I replaced the factory HU on my Limited with the Sony AX5000. Sound quality if great and I love the Android Auto integration. Overall I really like this unit and for what's important to me it's far superior to the Boom unit. However, I'm having a problem that I can't figure out....
After the bike sits for more than a couple days the Sony head unit won't power on when I turn the bike on. I can ride all day with the unit working fine when I turn the bike off but then come back a few days later and the unit won't power on. All I have to do to fix this is disconnect and reconnect the Sony harness from the factory harness, essentially cutting power to the Sony HU. The Sony manual says you can hold the Home button on the HU for more than 10 seconds to reset it but that does nothing.
I've tried to determine how long it takes for the unit to go dark on me and it seems like something longer than 2-3 days. I've tested it after an hour, a couple hours, a day and almost 2 days and it always seems to start up. It's only after it sits 2 or 3 days or more that it won't start up. I'm also sometimes getting a BCM trouble code U0184 (Lost Comm with Radio) but I don't get the code every time this happens.
Is there any reason the control module needs reprogrammed to tell it there's an aftermarket radio? It's almost like the bike "forgets" it has a radio or else the Sony unit goes to sleep and won't wake up without cutting power to it. Could be a bad Sony unit I suppose too. I'm at a loss.
I got and installed ax5000 last week. Havent had OPs problem yet, but bike hasnt been idle for more than a day or two. Still on version 1.0
havent connected phone or tried navigation yet. Plan to do so with Android Auto next week. Geeks at BB claim it wont work for squat, but maybe they were hoping to sell me something.

I haven't had that problem with mine either. Fires up every time. The only thought I have on that is your battery may be weak. Have you tried to hook up a trickle charger to it and let it sit for 3+ days? I would try that and see if the radio still does the same thing while on a charger.

The bike is on a trickle charger anytime I'm not riding it and the battery is brand new and has no problem turning the bike over.
I am at a loss on this one. My only other suggestion is when it goes into sleep mode then take it for a ride without the reboot (yes without tunes) and shut the bike off. Then see if it comes back on after a ride. I still think it has something to do with low voltage. Have you tried contacting sony direct about this problem? Also depending on what interface module you are using, it may be that too. I had a problem with my sosche interface loosing thumb controls while riding. I had to unplug and replug the interface as something wasn't making connection right.

Just a thought.
I've actually tried that too. Did a 5 hour ride without tunes a couple weekends ago. It seems once it goes out to lunch it's done.
I bought this unit through a package deal from Fat Head Cycles that included the Sony HU and custom harness with handlebar controls (from Metra). Even though I had some problems originally with the Metra interface, these guys have been fantastic with their customer service. Quick to respond and no problem sending replacements if there's a problem. Cliff and Chris are really great to work with. I reached out to them and they've never heard of or seen this either. He's sending me a new Sony HU. I'm hoping I just got a bad one.

Well you answered my next question then with contacting who you bought it thru. It sounds like there maybe an internal voltage problem in the hu itself. Keep us updated when you get the new one installed and hopefully that is the problem.
I ran mine for a few days last week and didn't have the shutting down issue. Only issue I had was Android Auto wanting me to set the parking brake.
Don't have one of those so I'm assuming it;s either miswired or I need to update the firmware.
