Default Where to start

I have a 2008 Ultra Classic with the stock stereo system and I'm looking to upgrade. My pipes are loud so in order to hear the stereo I have to turn it up so loud that the sound is distorted. I want buy a new head unit, speakers, and amp but I can only afford to buy one piece at a time. Where should I start to get instant results? If I buy a head unit and speakers will I even need an amp?

To answer your last question first. AMP yes! the biggest thing you can add to your system is always an amp. Speaker choices are wide and vary in cost and power. A PA speaker produces the sound volume you are looking for but not always the best all around sound for a 2 speaker setup. In replacing the head unit, you will need to purchase a wiring kit to allow you to have the functionality of your thumb controls. Just to let you know of the added cost. It isnt expensive, just wanted to let you know.

You are going to need all 3 to get noticeable results at highway speed. I would save up for all 3 and then install. All depends on what you're looking to spend.

Just an idea of a budget system, your looking at approx.:
-Head unit and hand controls $300
-Amp $150-$300
-Speakers $100-$300
-Wiring/fuse $30

I agree with these guys, you also may want to see if anyone else in the group is from your area, and you could listen to a few different systems before you spend your hard earned cash. A common goal around here is to do it right the first time, but most have made MANY upgrades and are still not, nor will ever be totally satisfied. The classified here also quite often have some pretty good deals.
