Hey guys, I bought a 2014 Street Glide Special in late September....here in Michigan mother nature decided that we didn't need a fall season and went straight from summer to winter by late October so, I didn't get much seat time. I didn't get a chance to get out and see (and hear) what other bikes like mine were doing to their stock radio. So, to already make a short story long, I'm looking to upgrade just a bit over the winter.....research for the right gear, maybe get some good holiday deals and install in the spring.
Nothing is written in stone but, here is what I'm thinking. I am thinking about keeping the stock radio and have it flashed. I have on order some stretched bags with 6x9 speaker lids, I am thinking of replacing the fairing speakers with better ones, and adding a amp. I have no desire to have the loudest set up at a bike rally, I do want good quality sound that can be heard easily by myself and the other half while we roll down the road.....I did have a D&D fat cat exhaust installed so it's not the quietest bike on the block.
Counting the down payment and mod's I have already done, my bank account is close to 15K lighter than it was just 2 months ago so......budget is a concern. I would like to keep the amp and four speakers under 1K if that is possible.
So, any recommendations would be much appreciated.

I heard these speakers on a bike the other day and they sounded pretty damn good and trust me I've heard a lot of speakers! If I remember correctly the ole boy was also running a Hertz HDP4 amp. Personally I think there are much better (cheaper) bang for the buck amps out there than the Hertz HDP4. But that is what HE was running. Those speakers would sound 10X better with a JL, Stinger or Sound digital amp. That said. My recommendation would be to keep it simple. These speakers in the fairing, Stinger SPX700X4 amp and a set of the Hertz MPX 690.3 6x9's in the lids. Now guys are gonna suggest a bunch of exotic **** but if you want to keep it simple. This is a damn good 4 speaker set up.
I'd suggest you keep an eye on the Forum Audio classifieds. Recently seen some JL 600/6's for about $300 and a Hertz HDP4 for $350. Plenty of Unicorn Hunters on here change out amps and speakers like a normal guy, changing underwear.

With the amps you suggested the OP will have to swap out the OEM amp tray for a JM tray
JABK-HBW14 which will add around $160 or so to the budget

Where at in Michigan? There are a few audio places around to hear set-up's and depending where your located at, could maybe let you here a few people's systems.
OP listen to Gann and others like him that know the ins and outs of good sound for your four speaker setup. Once your budget recovers maybe consider some lowers to put speakers in. I figure with you being up north the added wind protection might be nice and when you get two more speakers in front of your face the music sounds more like music and less like noise. I know that is over simplifying it but that is what it seemed like to me when I added lowers.
Then again my bike sounds like the Devil is coming to dinner and he's already been in the bean dip...
I have to agree with Gann on the setup he suggested. I personally have not heard the cx 165 but I have a set of cpx 165 that I have run with a stinger and mpx 690's in the lids. For a 4 channel setup, it sounded pretty good.

Im sure your 100% right with the sound quality of the lowers being much better but...and no offense to those who have them, Im not into that look. That is a fine look for a Ultra, but not a street glide imho.
