I think 8 inch lids flow with the right bike. My last bike had a 26 and stretched bags and it looked the part with the Speed by Design lids. My current bike has a 21 and Top Shop 4.5 bags so I'm running CVO lids.
My only advice is if you are putting speakers INSIDE the bags I wouldn't over think what lids to go with or think that bigger (8's) is better.

Oh and btw I am a grandpa 3 times over so the catorizing of sleds fits me well.

I would have to agree with you 100% with lines that flow and functionality.
To much can be a bad thing as air space is limited in the bags.
