Not Tailwind, but that is exactly how it's done.

I've got a question about tuning this setup. If my math isn't terrible, I should be looking for about 21 VAC at 75% volume with a 0dB/1kHz test tone with engine running ( sqrt( 2 ohms x 220 watts ) = 20.97V).

First off, does this seem correct? I haven’t put the DVOM on the 62ix’s yet, but I read that they were ~2.5 ohms. Is my math close enough?

My second question is with this gain setting, do I risk overdriving the speakers by using speed controlled volume? It seems like I have the volume set to 75% ish most of the time, but SCV has it at 100% going down the highway. I would like to avoid letting the magic smoke out the first time I hit 70mph.

Turn off the speed control you will have bad things happen if you continue to use it.

...but the volume button isn't automagic.

Does my target voltage of 21 VAC look correct-ish?

I still don't entirely follow setting the gain at 75% volume to "allow for gain overlap". That's setting you up to have clipping at anything over 75%, no?

Yes it would, other than 75% is now your max volume. Coincidentally, it's the same reason you don't use AVC. If you turn the volume up to the new max with AVC on, you will exceed it at speed.

After some more reading about the 75% volume number, it would seem that 75% is the point where the source introduces clipping. I was thinking that 75% was some magic number where you could still turn the source up all the way and not damage anything. Kind of like "turn it up to 11". Unless I'm still misunderstanding this.

I'm in the middle of installing parts now. Oddly, pulling the tank was way easier than pulling the speaker pods. Are the pods on special models different than the pods on standard models? Mine are black and had about twice as many screws holding them on as seemed necessary (8 for each side).

For some reason I thought I could just remove and replace the speakers. Which I did, then I found the interference issue with the tweeter, the surround, and the grill. So, a quick search told me that I needed to install the speaker inside the pod. A little light trimming with a couple of pairs of cutters and everything fits inside the pods. How critical is sealing the hole that the speaker wire passes through? I'm guessing not too critical since there are brackets that have the speakers out in the open.

Which brings me to my big question of the evening... how sensitive is the GPS receiver? I assume that's what I'm looking at, adhesive taped to the tray above the head unit. Do I need to relocate that up and away from the amp to avoid interference? I have a bunch of 3M emblem tape, so, it's not a big deal to move it.

Guys, I genuinely appreciate the insight and advice as I plug through this. And it's been fun learning something new.

You have it right now about the 75%. It is to limit the distortion that the head unit puts out above that. As for the GPS antenna, I have not had a problem with it near the amp.

Thanks for the clarification on the GPS receiver.

Another dumb question: Do you give up control resolution on the volume by setting the amp gain for 75% of source volume? Or, asking that another way, can the radio still be turned all the way up?
