Default sony 5000/7000 question

considering the sony avx7000 bundle for my 16 RGU. For those of you that have the 5000 or the few that may have the 7000 how does the handlebar controls compare to the stock HU? Like is it easy to scroll thru apps, volume, maps etc just like the stock unit? I can say I've hardly ever touched the screen on my HU because i use the fingertip controls on the bars and I don't want to lose that. I know it retains the controls to an extent but is anyone unhappy with losing something important they used all the time?

I have the 5000. The thumb controls will skip songs and do volume up and down. That's basically it. No moving in the screen as a cursor using the control.

Yeah I have the Alpine and it does those same basics to include mute and a couple other very simple functions, thus not having map thump controls can be a setback. However the maps are a ton better so it's ultimately a game of give and take.

Even though you lose some functionality it's still worth it IMO. Android auto kills

Did we every determine if there were any significant differences between the 5000 and the 7000 other than 5V Pre-out? I know there were some fantasy rumors out there that the 7000 was water resistant but that's getting debunked a bit as the buttons seem to be a bit more sealed than the 5000.
Could be an opportunity for some folks to grab a 5000 on the cheap.

Someone posted a video link to fathead cycle comparing the 2 units. I think it was posted here yesterday.

Saw something on FB from Fat Head Cycles regarding 7000, said it was waterproof and had waterproof buttons per Sony website.

This was kinda strange to me, because a guy at Rockford Fosgate told me at Myrtle Beach last week that his rep said no waterproof 7000. Might have surprised everyone with it, as the Q&A on the Fat Heads post indicated a lot of people just bought 5000s, and wouldn’t have if they had been told. The response was a cheery,”send us a PM...”

Bottom line? If it’s water resistant even...it will be on my wish list for Christmas.

Interesting cause I thought I saw Garage Bagger specifically stating that they were not waterproof but did have different buttons. Maybe Fathead has a cover they include in the kit? Sony site makes no mention of it.

Time will tell so be patient. The 5 v out is huge but the 100x4 at 4 prob won't be a benefit for most.
Still thinking the 5000 w a rain cover will be a better play for most audio enthusiast pushing their speakers a bit harder as the 1lb add for the internal amp will be a waste.

Went to look at one yesterday, mid install. The buttons seem to be water-sealed, but I didn't see where the screen is any better protected. The housing/case has no protection either. I don't believe they claim waterproof, just water resistant. The upside is they now come with a 3 year warranty but at this stage of the game, who knows if that covers water intrusion issues.

As T said, the 5v preout is a plus. The 100wx4 down to 2ohm may be a bonus for those that don't want an amp. With the right speakers you may get away without one.

The handlebar functions are no better with the new model either. The new unit is also about 1-1/2" deeper than the 5000 because of the integral amp upgrade. Not that it would be a deal killer, as it's still shallower than the stock Boom unit.
I will say this, the Sony headunits just plain sound better than the stock ones and gets rid of the bin file differential.

Personally, I like the Boom functions, nav and waterproof platform. I still think it's hard to make the switch. If the Sony had better controls function and true waterproof, I'd be a player.
