Seems to me like you barely know more than i do if anything at all, but want to throw your 2 cents in whenever you get the chance. Thanks for the input i guess.

So I'm new to the forum and somewhat new to the touring model world as well. I have an 08 Ultra. My questions are involving some in depth stuff about my specific set up and making sure im not pushing it to its limits.
I just bought a Sony DSX-M80 from Fathead cycles since I started having issues with my stock unit. This head unit has an internal 400 watt amp. I also have a J&M Rokker 500 watt amp and the 6.71 speakers up front with the 5.25s in the back. I have the head unit set to 63 HZs and the max volume setting is at 35. Its freaking loud and crystal clear.
Now to my questions. 1 How does the 400 watt amp in the head unit work with the 500 watt external J&M amp? 2. I use my phone for music with the volume all the way up then use the stereo volume to adjust. Is this overpowering the input side of the system? (Read that in a few forums and dont understand how it would but i figured id ask). 3. How do i make sure the watts from the amp isnt too much for the speakers? My fairing speakers have 300 watt peak 200 rms and my rears are 140 peak. If my amp is putting out 500 watts max i would think between the 4 i have plenty of ability left. Thats why im trying to understand how the internal head unit amp works. Ive done some googling and it seems like most websites/videos/forums either go way too in depth for me to understand or not enough to answer my questions.
Sorry for the long first post. Just trying to learn about some audio. Thanks for the input.
The Sony is rated at 40w RMS per channel and 100w max. Which means it will barely give 40w extra watts per channel. Not something I would count on for your overall power. Your amp is allegedly able to produce 125w RMS at 2 ohms. So maybe amp and radio are pushing 150w to each speaker. Just as an overview. Again, that's what J&M says their amp is producing.
For reference: you can buy a Sound Digital 800.4S for around $350 that will absolutely produce 200w of CLEAN power to each channel and small enough to fit in fairing. Another reason guys stay away from J&M.

Thank you. This answers the question i was asking from the beginning. Just to be clear the amp was already in the bike when i got it and the speakers were a warranty replacement from the 7.25s. If i were to buy a set up from scratch i dont think i would spend j&m money but i will say im very happy with the sound quality. I just wanted to make sure i wasnt overpowering my speakers.
Lots of very knowledgeable members in this Audio forum.
Dont dis what can be a very valuable resource if and when the time comes!
Im not trying to dis anyone. Im just trying to get some questions answered from people that actually know audio. Not an opinion from a guy that seems to have slightly more, if not the same amount of knowledge as me.

Well, he told you the truth, not his opinion. Wonder why JM audio hides their speaker and amp specs...
