So I'm new to the forum and somewhat new to the touring model world as well. I have an 08 Ultra. My questions are involving some in depth stuff about my specific set up and making sure im not pushing it to its limits.
I just bought a Sony DSX-M80 from Fathead cycles since I started having issues with my stock unit. This head unit has an internal 400 watt amp. I also have a J&M Rokker 500 watt amp and the 6.71 speakers up front with the 5.25s in the back. I have the head unit set to 63 HZs and the max volume setting is at 35. Its freaking loud and crystal clear.
Now to my questions. 1 How does the 400 watt amp in the head unit work with the 500 watt external J&M amp? 2. I use my phone for music with the volume all the way up then use the stereo volume to adjust. Is this overpowering the input side of the system? (Read that in a few forums and dont understand how it would but i figured id ask). 3. How do i make sure the watts from the amp isnt too much for the speakers? My fairing speakers have 300 watt peak 200 rms and my rears are 140 peak. If my amp is putting out 500 watts max i would think between the 4 i have plenty of ability left. Thats why im trying to understand how the internal head unit amp works. Ive done some googling and it seems like most websites/videos/forums either go way too in depth for me to understand or not enough to answer my questions.
Sorry for the long first post. Just trying to learn about some audio. Thanks for the input.

The watts dont stack , so you are not adding the 2. J&M rates him stuff at 2ohm. I wont go to his site and look it up for sure, I dont want his ads all over my search pages. so that being said I would guess you are 125 watts per channel. Never have your phone at max volume, maybe a click or two below.

So what is the 400 watts from the internal amp doing? I have my fade at like 70/30 or 60/40 favoring the front speakers to ensure the rears arent getting to peak watts. Is there a reason for not going full volume on the phone? Only thing i read that made sense to me was that distortion from the input side is then amplified on the output side. I dont plan on having it up all the way anymore. Just trying to understand why. Also my amp is an older model which is another reason i came here. I havent been able to find much information on it through J&M. I dont even see a way to adjust gains or anything on it.
The on board amp is bypassed when you use the RCa outs. It is not really 400 watts more like 25-30 in real life. The phone at full volume can introduce distortion. J&M stuff is pretty much locked down if I remember correctly , once again I am not interested in looking at his site. he is a marketing machine that convinces people that his crap is high end.
That's too bad. I replaced my speakers and added the 800W amp from J&M on my FLHTK and to me it sounds great. Easy plug and play with my only complaint being that I thought the wiring harness was about 2-3 inches too short.
