So after tinkering for a bit with the AudioControls Mobile Tools app I'm impressed. For what we need this works great. I told my buddy to pay the $6 for the unlocked version of the RTA and skip the mic. This is a lite version of the AudioTools app by Studio Six Digital. To test speaker polarity you can get the speaker pop wav file here (you'll need to get the zip file though as the direct link to the wav file was broken). In case you need them I get my pink noise and 1K tones here.

Be advised that whatever app / software you use is only as accurate as the mic you use. All pretty good options mentioned here.

Agreed, after tuning I've never seen a flat response. I only ever used an RTA to get things flat(ish) with pink noise for a starting point and then went by ear using a few of my favorite songs. At least that's what I've done. YMMV

Also results tend to vary wildly depending on the tools you're using, even on the same bike with the same settings. Here is a couple of different iOS RTAs I tried on my bike. I don't use a DSP so I can't really do much other than play with the HPF on my LLs and tone controls on the HU (in this case bass and treble are flat).

AudioControl Mobile Tools

Audio Spectrum Analyzer dB RTA. This one claims to double accuracy if you pay to unlock (which may or may not be true). Regardless quite a difference...

I had similar results with same apps, even when using an Audio Control mic.

Assuming “our application” means motorcycle audio.

Is there a base curve / shape you look to set via RTA before fine-tuning to your ear?

were you asking me? I've never used an RTA or DSP on my bike. I've been told by a guy I really respect who does use both though and he says he tries for an upside-down smile (I swear, this is what he told me) and then goes from there. He then fine tunes for the customer's ears but says he usually ends up with a fairly flat freq response. As I said above those pics were just using a few iOS RTAs on my iPhone and other than setting the bass and treble flat I've not done any tuning. I just use a BT setup on my bike and I'm pretty happy with it ... for now Anyway I called him yesterday and he told me to run a freq sweep from 20-20K using the RTA and see how it looks. Here's the result. I have peak and low holds turned on so you can see....it is pretty flat, and follows the pic using pink noise reasonably close. Somewhat surprising really as I thought the overall sound was fairly bright and usually have bass +1 and treble flat or -1...huh
