Default Need a little help

I am audio illiterate. I have a 1991 flhtc. I've updated my radio to a Sony that is bt capable. I think the radio is 50w. My speakers are the original, and only the front ones. So when I set my stuff right on bt, my radio is plenty loud for hearing even at high speed cruising, but I have to turn the volume up, only at interstate speeds, to about 40 and 50 is the max. I have a 400w amp and 2, 250w speakers for it and I'm wondering if it's all necessary. I know the amp and new speakers will allow me to listen at a lower volume setting. Does this make a big difference in the life of the radio? One of my speakers has quit and I was wondering if I'd be better off selling my amp and speakers and getting some high end 60w speakers. I mostly listen to 70s rock if that makes any difference.

Appreciate any help.

Stock speakers have some issues with blowing when ppl turn the volume up past distortion in order to hear them, which is what you sound like you're doing.

If you want something you can hear loud and clear WITHOUT distortion, and therefore removing the risk of blowing your speakers, then a good amp and speakers are what you'd need.

You could get a better pair of 2ohm speakers and they them, but you're still limited by your pre amp. I think the infinity kappa 62ix are 2 ohm and pretty cheap.

BTW....which amp and speakers do you have?

I always recommend an amp. 125-150 watts per channel minimum, is what I like to use, depending on the speakers. Most people tend to blow up speakers more often by underpowering them. They usually end up trying to squeeze out more volume, and end up putting distortion to the speaker. With an amp added to the system, hopefully you are able to get to an enjoyable volume prior to the head unit, or amp sending distortion to the speaker.
