Without looking at a schematic I do not know the ACC power wire pin number on the OEM harness.
i recall Jay @ Volunteer Audio posting about Sony being hardwired to the Harley daylight running lamp and that’s why there was so many complaints about daylight and poor screen visibility with the 7000 (the solution was to turn the auto sensor off)
so i think you are on the right lines
but i also agree with your post about rebooting your phone and getting the correct result out of maps sometimes
I’ve just fitted my Sony in the car, so I might try auto maps and see how it’s behaving now with my phone (same radio, same phone, different wiring)
Have to say i’m more impressed with the HDHU14 and light sensing, the screen is crystal at all lights so far
I checked and verified, Apple maps, Google maps, and Waze all run in dark mode when it's light out. I seem to remember when I took my initial ride, I wanted to make sure Carplay worked as it should, Apple maps was in dark mode, I switched to Google maps and it ran normally, an update shouldn't effect Carplay, looks like we're going to have to figure this out on our own, PPI will be no help
You can set Google maps to run in light mode but the rest of CarPlay stays in dark mode. Its annoying! At this point Im not sure if its a CarPlay thing or if its an issue with the head unit auto dimming. The guy at Volunteer Audio said it doesnt go by the headlights being on but Im not so sure.

it's not a Carplay issue, I don't experience these issues in my Grand Cherokee with any of the navigation apps in Carplay. I don't like workarounds, but the hdhu14 is too good otherwise to stress over this issue, for me at least
After doing a little digging on the SS harness I found that the orange/white wire was going to the hand control module so it is being controlled via can bus thru the module.
The HU is only mirroring what the device is sending. So if the device is sensing a low light situation the headunit will mirror it.
If the changing the settings on the device does not work the other option would be to disconnect the orange/white wire from the control module so HU works independently from the can bus system for the dimming feature.
My phone is definitely in light mode and the head unit is displaying CarPlay in dark mode. It does it all the time, I have tried every setting in bright sunshine. I can only hope they push out a software update to correct this or my only choice would be to modify the harness. On a road glide with the angle of the screen, we need full brightness.
I went ahead and snipped the illumination wire, I did it "for the science" as they say today all three Carplay navigation apps showed daylight maps, soon as it gets dark this evening, I'll see if the maps and lighting switch...
