after snipping the illumination wire, maps still automatically go into night mode when it gets dark, it appears the unit still dims in low light as well, I wanna do a bit more testing to be sure. but maps go into light mode and dark mode as they should with the wire snipped...
I did some further testing, initially when I tested it with the illumination wire snipped, I didn't test it in a pitch black shed. I reconnected the illumination wire, made my shed pitch black, and low and behold, with the illumination wire connected, then disconnected, there was a noticeable difference in the dimming with the wire connected. I ****ing hate workarounds! especially on a stereo we are paying $900+ for. But, I put a toggle switch inline with the illumination wire, I hid the toggle up under the ignition switch panel, it is attached with a piece of 3M double sided tape, it is totally out of sight, but can be easily switched on for night riding, which I don't do much of, but none the less, I want it at least half right. PPI better come up with a proper fix for this ****...
I agree completely. There should be something they can do software related to at least give us the option of turning dimming on and off. They added a lot with the last update so I cant see why they couldnt do this. We will see if it gets properly addressed. This has to be apparent in their testing before releasing the unit.

oh I don't when us early adopters figure them out well done that man!
I hate it more when we've had to pay a highly trained unprofessional to look at it and say "NO, the big book of Harley says thou shall not pass" oh "and thats $100/hr Harley-Tax for the privilege of my reading the standard issue motoco response"

It good to see that you put in the effort into trying to find the issue. According to your post you had the same results as I did in my testing.
There are less and less members coming on the forum now willing to do any diagnosing and just looking for the quick fix answer.
Thanks @scott_0 for being the one willing to experiment to find a resolution / work around to this issue.
I followed his lead and snipped the orange/white wire and bam, maps now switch between Dark mode and Day mode. I figured I'd solder wire to run a switch. Looking at the harness, I figured I'd pull the end out of the harness connector to do the soldering. Now my only issue is, I didn't take note of the pin location 🤦🏼♂️
If anyone happens to have their HDHU.14+ not installed yet, or if you have the fairing open can you snap a picture of the harness where the orange/white wire is located. I've contacted Jay at Volunteer Audio, but still awaiting a response.
Was Jay at Volunteer Audio not able to help? he has been a huge help to people with this radio
I've reached out twice via email.Figured since I need a picture/diagram that would be the best method of contact. Must admit, the first two times were late in the evening.
