Default HU clipping point

When setting gains and putting HU to 75% , is that just a safe zone for not passing the clipping point? Should I find my actual clipping point of my HU and then set the gains? My HU goes to 50 and 75% is around 37.

I can actually set the max volume to 37 so it never goes over that. So Im asking if I should find my real clipping point on the HU and then set the volume and gains from that instead of just 75%?

Which head unit? I assume aftermarket based on being able to set a max volume. Stocks cant do that.

But thats always been a good rule of thumb for harley boom radios. Never hurts, regardless of which radio, to check exactly where it starts clipping.

Sony DSX-M80. So is the 75% just a safe area to stay away from clipping or is it for another reason?

Not sure that applies to aftermarket radios so much. I've heard some ppl say that new soundstream radio has a clean signal at max volume, so not sure.

It was always the rule for stock radios...especially if setting gains my ear or were unable to test the output signal with an oscope or DD1. Usually 3 or 4 notches from max volume, set your gains, than that is your new max volume. Thats how mine is set, but I do want to go back in just out of curiosity and confirm where the radio does start distorting.

No, use the 1000khz one.....I think they are listed in the setting gains sticky, and even a source for them.

Ahh sorry. hmmm not sure about testing the HU for clipping and using a test tone. Maybe someone can comment to confirm what you should use. I thought you mean setting gains.

Jesus, here’s some real advice for you.

Most of the Sony’s are clean at 48,49, or 50. Of your want to test it for max, you certainly can using a 1k test tone.

Or do what most guys do and set it to 45. Gives you a little room incase your playing something with less quality. And my max volumes have to end in 0 or 5, otherwise my brain will go insane.
