Default Thinking about getting a new bike...

Howdy all,

I've been on the fence for a while about getting a new bike. I want an Ultra in chrome, and it looks like a remaining 2023 model is the only option. If my local dealer can source one at an okay price I may just grab it.

My question is what are some things those of y'all that went from an older bike to a Rushmore model noticed that were advantages/disadvantages? If I get the bike I'm not planning on doing a full stereo upgrade right off the bat, but I would like to eventually wind up back where I am now with my 2010 Ultra, which is lids, tour pak pods, lowers and fairing. I really like how my iPod works with my existing head unit but from what I've read I will probably have to give it up. I don't really like streaming, I like just having my own music on the bike and being able to switch between playlists.

Anyhow sorry for the vague question but I'm sure others have made this transition and I was just curious as to what y'all thought.

When I went to my 2021 from my 2014, I found a world of difference. The 2014 was a Rushmore. My 2004 was not and when I got the 2011 - that jump was really nice. I moved to the 2014 from the 2011 mainly because to the radio system.

Speaking of the radio, you will not need your Ipod. Simply put all of your music on a flash drive and you can play for days.

Whatever you do, please enjoy. I have heard that there are a lot of deals on the 2023 models. BTW, where in Virginia

Southern VA, right on the NC line. I've heard you can put music on a flash drive on the newer bikes, but can you create and navigate playlists? I've been spoiled on my bike with the iPod module. I can navigate playlists with my thumb controls.

Southern Va is a nice area. I am from Richmond originally. Use to go down to Buggs Island (kerr Dam) a long time ago. Also spent some time in South Boston and Bracey.

I think you will find the flash drive very user friendly. Let us know if you get that new bike - and enjoy.

I was wondering if it were possible to set up playlists when using the USB drive plugged into the newer head unit. Have you tried that yet?

The infotainment system will only read what is available on the USB drive.

You would have to build a playlist and then download to your USB drive

So it basically just plays what is on the root of the USB drive; it can't understand any type of sorting?

Hey Hoyt, good luck with your new bike purchase. You'll love it.

What phone do you have? On my 17, I did the flash drive route and it worked fine. but the new GTS head unit is way more user friendly when using AA or Apple Carplay.

If you have a phone with a good amount of storage, then use that as your flash drive, then use a music app like Musicolet to manage your songs and playlists. Then the app will be much more user friendly and have full thumb control functionality.

You may find you'll enjoy some of the streaming services later on as well. I too was reluctant to use them at first, and I know in your area, connectivity may be an issue, but might work out fine for some of them.

Hey Hoss good to hear from you.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S10+. With all the hooplah about AA on bikes recently do you think that would work? I have never owned any vehicles that had AA or Apple Carplay so I don't know anything about it. I appreciate the tip on Musicolet. I have never used an app on my phone to create playlists before so I guess that will be a learning curve. I just created several playlists on my iPod and they showed up on the head unit. On my PCs I have playlists created in Windows Media player. I wonder if there are ny music apps that would work with those?

Also now that y'all are helpin me kick this stuff around I realized I will need a new phone mount. I am letting mine go with my old bike because I just got the part that holds the phone because it worked with the existing GPS mount on the bike. I always use Otterbox phone cases so I guess I would need something that would work good with that. Anyone got any opinions on those?

Thanks for all the replies folks. This is the biggest change in sleds I've had in years and I don't really know anyone close by that has one of the newer GTS head units so I've got a lot of learnin to do.

You should be fine with that phone, though its a bit outdated, you can upgrade your sd card...not sure how large that phone will support, but Ibet its at least 128gig. Plenty of room for 1000;s of songs.

If you stay with a 23 and older bike, you'll have the GTS. AA works fine on those. I think AA works on the new skyline radio IF you buy a separate aftermarket module. Dealer should set it up for you before you leave. Keep in mind, AA only works with the usb plug...though I htink some have used Bluetooth modules to make it work that way as well. I just have always kept mine plugged in and in the cubby. Like I said, you can easily traverse your phones music with the radio/thumb controls.

Not sure about mounts. One that is the clamp style I would guess. I too use otterbox cases.
