Default 2023 Ultra Limited rear speakers came loose

Howdy all,

More fun with stuff coming loose on my new 2023 Ultra Limited. Today after stopping for gas on the way back from the Parkway I noticed the rear brake side speaker was hanging out of the pod. Only one screw was in it and it was barely in there. The other three had fallen out and a couple of the rubber plugs that the screws go into were missing. I checked the other side and one screw was missing along with the threaded rubber plug and the other three screws were loose. One of them had pulled the rubber plug out. I put the loosest speaker in the saddlebag and rode on home.

When I got to looking at things in the basement I found that there is nothing at all holding those threaded rubber plugs in. When I put a speaker back in you could literally just pull it out with your fingers. Dumbest design I've ever seen, but then again this is Harley.

So now I've got to try to go by the dealer Tuesday when they open and see if they have any of those little T10 torx screws and rubber plugs in stock. Has anyone dealt with this problem before? If so what did you do to secure those little rubber plugs. I was thinking of using silicone on the plugs and a tiny bit of blue loctite on the screws but don't know if this would really be enough. The speakers are the Hertx SX 165 Neos.

I've had the same problem. I replaced the rubber inserts, siliconed them in. No loctite though. It's been good so far. My dealer had them in stock, which leads me to believe it's pretty common.

If it happens again, I figured I'd try metal speed clips instead.

I had it happen with Mmats back there. I found that anything heavier than the light-weight stock speakers will have this problem.
Never had the stock come loose so the design, in principle works I guess...provided the speakers don't weigh any more than a feather.
If I recall, I rotated them a bit, drilled little pilot holes and used some sheet metal screws.

Thanks for the tips folks. Last night I put silicone on a few plugs and put a speaker back in but was able to pull it out easily. I tried wrapping a small wire tie around the rubber plug on the inside of the pod and it seemed to help hold it in place. I'll try that method once I get replacement screws and plugs.

I was hoping not to have to drill holes and use sheet metal screws if I can help it, but that did work on my last bike without issues.

Warranty? Make the dealer fix it.

I had that same issue on both my 2014 and my 2021. Had the dealer fix my 2014. Was in Gettysburg last year and saw another bike, 2019 that also had this issue.

What I did was completely unscrew the screw (usually that rubber plug is right up next to the speaker). Take that plug and push it back into the hole and make sure it seats. Then put the screw back in.

My 2021 has help up for the last two years.
