Default pre-out voltage

I am again looking at upgrading my sound system, and am wondering about decks. How important in the pre-out voltage in sound quality/volume?

When I was really into this stuff years ago building car systems, that was a factor to consider when purchasing...

thanks!

...I was hoping to find a Sony unit with HD radio built in, with the five volt pre-outs...

Hey Mike, Pearl is right more is better, lol. I had a Kenwood Exelon X396 had 4v pre outs, but the cd player skipped. Traded that in (crutchfield took it back). I got a marine grade Alpine CDA 9886M, it has 4v pre outs, doesn't skip but the USB port was in back so I had to run a USB input cable from the rear of the Alpine to the area near the ignition switch ( I have a 07 Street Glide) where there is some dummy switches. and attach it there. Also consider the face illumination most are hard to read in bright day light.I think the marine faces are easier to read but still not as good as the stock H.K. unit but the aftermarket radios sound better! Ultranutz recommends the sony radio's Also look on Biketronics website they have Sony radios on there to get some ideas!:icon_beerchug : Rock on!

Seems like most of them are only 2 volt pre-out, if that. Doesn't Sony have more higher end decks, or should I be looking at different brands?

Did I mention I don't want to do this again? I already added a Wet Sounds amp, and I think Alpine speakers, using the stock head unit. A huge improvement, but I'm not at all satisfied.

Am looking at the SoundStream everyone is raving about, a different deck of course, and probably upgrading the speakers again.

I know, old subject, with a million links..Sorry.

your headunit brand and feature preference is all in the eye of the beholder. I recommend the Sony mainly based on my preference to have the iPod inside the face where I don't have to fool with it but it's also 100% compatible with the biketronics retro handlebar control kits.

Sony has several units that are 4v outputs and in reality a lot of the newer stuff will have 4v outputs. As GP and MM pointed out, when it comes to RCAs, more is better but too much can also be detrimental. You want to stay between 4 and probably no more than 7 (you won't get 7 without a line driver). I wouldn't concern myself with marine "grade" stuff. What a crock of &*^% that is and nothing more (my.02) than a sales gimmick to get you to pay more for less features and functionality.

Alpine, Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, etc. all have units with 4v outputs.

If you want a specific recommendation and you're not concerned with losing rider to passenger communication and CB, then with the bike you have;
  • Sony DSX210 or 310BTX. Only difference between the 2 is bluetooth.
  • Biketronics BT1002 retro kit (keep your handlebar controls and AVC (automatic volume control.
  • SS PN4.520D amp
  • 2 pair of Polk MM651 speakers (fairing and tourpak pods)
  • Cycle Sounds 6.5" speaker adpater rings (gonna need these regardless of which 6.5" speaker you go with for the fairing)
  • You'll need about 6' of 8ga power wire to run back to the battery
  • You'll need 2 pair of short RCA cables (shorter the better)
All of this can be had for under $800 total and about 4 hours of installation time and will rock your world.. ok ok.. maybe just your bike. :-)

Thanks, I appreciate your advise! I will probably do exactly as you've recommended. Do the Polk's fit in the tourpak without mods, or do I need another set of 6.5 speaker ring adapters?

They drop right in. the only thing you'll have to do is drill new mounting holes for the screws. that's it.
