I purchased a set of JM Lower Cords for my 2012 Street Glide last Summer, they worked fine until a couple of weeks ago, when I attempted to use OEM Lower Cords, they would NOT work. My Harley Dealership found that the JM Lower Cords had LARGER Pins than the OEM Cords. The JM Lower Cord Pins had stretched the "Y" connection on the Bike so that the OEM Pins would not make contact. My Harley Dealership took PICTURES of the JM Pins and the OEM Pins and sent them to both JM Audio and to the JM President. Everybody agrees that the JM Pins are LARGER, however the JM President advised" he could not help". Not only will JM Corp. not honor their WARRANTY, but they will not even return our Email requests. HELP!!!!! JP Cycle, CycleGear and Harley Davidson Customer Help all agree that the JM Pins are LARGER and that they should not be, but advised the only solution is to replace the two Audio Harnesses and NOT use the JM Lower Cords. Still NO HELP from the JM President. Any ideas of what we can do would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
Gee Usaully JMJOHN is johnny on the spot when he's pushing the JM product on here! you know the BEST Harley after market speaker with no specs, no idea who makes it, and the teeny weeny magnets! Hello john are you there... uh John can you help this guy, hello John are you there....uummm hello... hello....
There are some many better options out there for your audio. This is why I tell everyone to do there homework, and not learn the had way like I did when I bought the J&M system.
Thanks Streetrockking, We do tend to learn from our mistakes. I will never buy another item for JM.
I've been using the J & M headsets on my Harleys for at least a dozen years, without any issues. The lower cords that I'm using now were purchased a year or two ago and while the pins are ever so slightly larger than the Harley Davidson cords, they have never given me problems. I also checked a set of cords that I've had for 10 years or more (without problem) and the pins are exactly the same size as the newer ones.
I went ahead and emailed John at J&M about the problem and this was his response:
Ricky,
............as for pin sizes, I am not sure who started that rumor but we have been using the HC-ZHD lower cords on the Harley Ultra since 1998 without issues (15 years)) ,,,,,,,
If your Harley Dealer is saying that the J&M pins ruined the female connectors on your bike, I'm thinking that he is simply looking for a reason not to warranty the problem.
Thanks Guys: two items one-the two cords I received from JM are significantly larger than OEM Pins, as noted by the pictures. Two- the JM Pins work because they are still making a connection with the "Y" connector, which the OEM Pins are unable to do. Have talked with not only my Dealer, but several others as well as Harley Customer Help. All were sent pictures of the JM Pins as well as the OEM Pins.. They all agree that the larger JM Pins have widen the gape so that the OEM Pins are unable to make a solid connection with the "Y" connector. I have found that Harley was shipping Lower Cords some years back with a larger pin, the dealers sent the cords back as warranty and the problem was corrected by Harley Davidson. So my question is- why wouldn't JM correct the same problem?

First off, I understand the problem with the pins being different sizes.
What I don't understand is why you bought the J&M cords, used them, then went back to the OEM cords?
If the female connectors on the bike are "stretched" from using the J&M cords and won't make proper contact with the OEM cord pins, why not just continue to use the J&M cords, since you went to the cost & trouble of purchasing them? This would be the easiest and by far the least expensive (no cost at all) solution. I wouldn't spend the money replacing the receptacles on the bike and I sure wouldn't let this issue continue to make my blood boil.
My experience has been that the J&M headsets are better than the headsets that came with any of my Ultras, including my 2011, so I've always sold the Harley units and used J&M.
If something is supposed to d plug and play its supposed to match not screw up something why they don't provide specs for there stuff. you will realize it only gone screw something up. only Harley oem stuff is plug and play 100 percent of the time there is things that are close and usually work but in my experiences there is always something not gong to fit right or screw up. Just my 2 sh__s.
