Default Zumo 665 interface

I have installed the Zumo 665 on my 2013 Ultra Limited. I installed the interface module along with a dash pad and mount from the CVO catalogue. The problem is that I need a hard wire from the GPS to thew AUX input on the radio in order for the XM radio to work consistantly. Whats up?

i guess you need to define "consistently" sir.

in order for the Zumo to work as an "integrated" piece of the HD advanced audio setup you will

1.) need to be using the Roadtech version of the Zumo 660 or 665
2.) you will need the HD NIM - Part # 76000024A

maybe i misunderstood you. so are you talking about the XM module built into the GPS or are you talking about the HD XM module that sits inside the fairing atop the radio?

If the latter, hit up harleypingman as he's the wiz at those overlay harnesses and can tell you what you need to do in order to NOT have to buy the HD overlay harness.

If you're referring to the GPS then see post above.

My GPS is a Road Tech and I used the Nim interface module. Before I ran a wire from the GPS to the AUX jack on the radio the XM would only play intermitently. When the FM would be silenced, so that the GPS could give routing instructions, the XM radio would play. Also when I stopped at a Harley dealer, somewhere in Iowa, the owner of the business was able to get the XM radio to play and change chanels, but only for a short while. After I hard wired the audio out on the GPS to the AUX port on the radio everything worked fine. My question is, why should I need a external wire when I should be able to recieve the XM and have it play over my radio without one?

something is not wired correctly here.. if I were you, I'd be at my service department where it was installed for them to make it right.

To hear the XM Radio from the GPS along with any MP3 songs that you have on the GPS as well as Traffic and Weather alerts from the GPS you MUST use the AUX input. The only audio that the NIM passes is Turn Prompts.

I would go further now but I have a Dental Appt. one of my fav things.

been a while since I've had a stock head unit but I'm almost 100% certain that my XM from my GPS worked perfectly fine through the head unit without the need to plug in a cable to the AUX port of the head unit.

Yes the aux wire in the kit MUST be plugged into the aux port on the radio, and the speaker switch on the dash must be in the 2nd or third position for it all to work.

Best thing is to read the installation instruction that comes with the NIM, it will explain how the system will work.

The NIM will only pass Turn Prompt to the radio, it will not pass any other audio output from the GPS. To hear XM radio from the GPS (if you have the model 665) MP3 songs you install on a micro SD card and insert into the GPS, traffic or weather alerts from the GPS you must use the Auxiliary Input on the radio and the radio must be in the "AUX" mode. The speaker switch can be in any position for these audio signals. By the way if the radio is in the AUX mode then the NIM becomes redundant, in other words you do not need the NIM because all audio output from the GPS will go thru the AUX Input.

It is important to understand just what the NIM does and what it will not do.

The NIM will automatically lower the audio signal you are listening to when a turn prompt is available from the GPS, it will then pass the turn prompt thru the radio. After the turn prompt the NIM will automatically return the radio to the audio source you were listening to before the turn prompt. This is all the NIM will do. If you can hear MP3 songs or hear a weather or traffic alert and your radio is not in the AUX mode then your NIM is defective and will eventually fail. The speaker switch has to be rocked all the way back (light on) for the NIM to work.

Very few Harley Techs know how the electronic systems on these bikes works. They will sell you a NIM along with the GPS and not even know if you need both or not. It all depends on what functionality you want.
