Default aftermarket head unit opinions...

Been digging around on the forum for hours and hours and noticed not a lot of traffic regarding Pioneer... so any opinions pro/con compared to f.e. Sony sets.

looking at the Pioneer DEH-X9500BHS Single Din In-Dash CD/MP3 Receiver. I can pick up new one for 155usd shipped!!!!!!

I want usb rear (this one has 2!), BTooth, (HD radio) and ability to "match" color to SG gauge color. I do not care about CD player.

also still debating Hawg or BT retro fit... I kind of like the AVC option BT still supports.

now on the sony I get a bit confused if they say USB: up to 500 songs in up to 128 folders... so total of 500 songs or 500 per folder (x 128). would think the latter (as my collection is a LITTLE BIT bigger - 90 GB! ). Not that I will take all of it on the bike though...

any thoughts?

as for the selection of head units, man it's all a matter of preference is what it boils down to. Find what you like and go for it.

IMO, most of these head units are similar if not the same quality these days. I know follks that have run sony, kenwood, pioneer, clarion, and jvc for years without issue. Just a matter of preference like I said...

As for the Sony and the confusion. Not 100% sure there and I'll tell you why. A lot of folks utilize playlists and folders. I don't. Every single mp3 track on my ipod is labeled as track 1 and then the appropriate name of the track. I do this so that when it shuffles, it shuffles properly. My other iPod that I don't always carry on the bike with me has about the same as you do, roughly 85GB and it sees all 15k somewhat songs.

Default Thanks for the info... preouts or speakerlines to Amp?

Thanks UltraNutz...

I got several huge 2.5 enclosed HD's floating around here so I might even consider building that one in . it does require extra oomppf (usb power), but as I got my cool usb charge module (3 usb ports in left side cover where the fuse box is - running usb ext cables throughout the bike) that should not be a problem.

how to build one? look at page 139 on the DIY MODS thread under Touring Models...

I am not a real Apple user BTW...

guess I got to bite the bullet on retro kit (leaning towards Biketronics BT1005 and splashcover) and the Pioneer 9500 as mentioned above. soldering 2 connectors together is my least concern...

Now - I did find a thread where you mentioned I should use the speakers outputs to connect to the amp (in this case RF300x2) even if the head unit has 4V preouts. any reason for this????? obviously need to recalibrate the RF output signal again with the 1000Hz cd I burned and a multimeter...
So far the MM651s are holding up pretty good - huge diff. over stock... my wife tabs my shoulder to tell me I need to turn it down LOL....

when dealing with a stock head unit speaker wires is the way to go. When dealing with an aftermarket head unit, anything under 4v outputs you'll probably want to run the speaker inputs to the amp as the impedance of the RCA inputs on these RF amps I've found to be a little strange and winds up costing you some volume. With 4v outputs, you should be ok and would be the preferred method of connectivity.

AAWAV,

Built my system when I lived in Vegas !! My buddies hang out on the strip, in the little strip mall between Harley Davidson Café, & Walgreens. The same strip that houses McD's & Fatburger.

Stop by there and check out their systems, and pick their brains. You might see & hear something you like !!

Good Look !!
