I should have researched before buying but I have purchased and installed the boom audio system on my 2012 Road King. The speakers look great but after 30 mph the sound is gone. I now refer to them as my $400 handlebar ornaments I don't want to add a fairing or would have bought a street glide. I have read where some people swear they have good sound at 75-80 mph with the Boom Audio system but I have a windshield, tried aiming the speakers more toward me, have ducked down under windshield, etc. but the best sound they produce is when the bike is parked!!
I have the boom audio on my 2013 FatBoy Lo..I use my Samsung Galaxy phone Pandora stations. I have great sound even on the highway at 70MPH. What are you using as the MP3 player? Is the sound turned all the way up on the MP3? When I first got mine it took me a day to figure you have to have the sound all the way up on the MP3 player.
I have a new Apple iPod and have tried my iPhone, both the same. I also tried bringing a song into an audio editing program and turned the volume up as much as I could, played it on the system and the louder I went with volume the more distorted it was. I really didn't expect good audio at Interstate speeds but wanted to enjoy some tunes while cruising back roads!!!
Did you take back to dealer to make sure it is hooked up correctly? I know a couple of people who have it with no complaints. Even when I turn sound up all the way I have no distortion in sound. Sure hope you can have someone figure it out because it is enjoyable having tunes while riding.

Everyone I know with the Boom system say's the same thing you are saying. . Sounds good in the garage but sounds like crap at 70 mph. Get a powerful amp and some good speakers and you will hear it at 80 mph.
i just recently bought a 2010 lo, it came with hd boom audio speakers. I wasn't expecting much but to my surprise they sound great around town and pretty good on the highway. The best handlebar speakers I have heard and have had others say the same thing. kybuhda , i would def check all connections, at 30 mph listening to heavy metal I do not get any distortion at all and they are loud.
