Default Trigger on PBR300x2 & Polk MM651

I've researching many different set ups and configurations of amps, speaker lids and faring speakers for my 2010 Street Glide. I am sticking with the stock HU. The only modifications I made to the audio system after purchasing the bike new in 09 was changing out the faring speakers to Hog Tunes. I also added the HT tweeter pods. I only listen to mp3 s burned to a CD. The volume is fine when doing 70 or less but anything above that the sound is distorted.

I decided that speaker lids were an over kill expense for me so I researched upgrading the faring speakers and adding an Amp. I ordered the PBR300x2 Amp, Polk MM651 speakers & faring speaker adapters. I went to my local Audio store and purchased 8 gauge wire (didn't have 10 gauge), inline fuse holder with 50 amp fuse (smallest they had) and large ring connectors.

I've read the install instructions that UltraNutZ posted. A few questions, can/should I also run the HT tweeter pods I already have on the bike? Or should I leave them disconnected? Do I cut off the factory speaker wire connectors or do I splice the wires and tape them up? Do I add new speaker connectors to the Amp output wires or do I soldier them to the speakers? Is this recommended practice?

Thanks!

You can keep the tweeter pod. I did anyway. After adding an amp the pod gets the dedicated front speaker channel from the radio.

Do I cut off the factory speaker wire connectors or do I splice the wires and tape them up?

No you can use the HT y-connectors... One side of the connector to the HT tweeter pod and make up some leads that will go from the other side of the y-connector to the input side of the amp. Essentially taking the + and - off the speakers and running those leads to the amp. No harness cutting necessary just crimp on some male spade terminals to the input harness for the PBR after you cut off the RCA plugs.

Do I add new speaker connectors to the Amp output wires or do I soldier them to the speakers? Is this recommended practice?

I made up some 12-16 inch leads with crimp on female terminals on one side and then soldiered the other side to the ouput harness of the PBR.

Thanks!

I don't tape anything electrical, period. just asking for trouble.

you can connect the tweeter pod to the amp if you'd like as it will have no effect on the total ohm load the amp sees. I think what you'll find is it can be overpowering so I'd recommend as Drew pointed out to connect them directly to the head unit instead.

I would rethink a 50 amp fuse on an amp. I also wouldn't size fuses because it's what they had.

And your reply is the exact reason I posted the fuse sizes. I was thinking a 25 amp fuse was an acceptable size. You?

john is right.. and you were right to post it.

25A is MORE than sufficient for that amp.

Thanks guys! The help is extremely appreciated! I went back to that audio shop today and talked to another guy, he found & just gave me a 20 Amp fuse. More experienced worker. He also gave me the male & female speaker connectors I needed. A great Audio shop to deal with... I have & still use a Technics Stereo Receiver that I bought there back in 1977. Yeah, I'm a little gray headed..

I made a 2-piece bracket out of aluminum for my PBR300x2. It sits above the HU. The Amp should get plenty of ventilation all around as I elevated it above the bracket with washers.

Bikes all tore apart as I am also waiting on the speakers & adapters to arrive.
