I started this discussion beginning of April, it’s now May 24th and I’m still waiting for spring! I’ve had 3-4 rides (by now I’d be out enough times to quit counting). Reading a discussion on the same weather for our friends down south re. cold and wet riding. I’ll just keep waxing/polishing Jolene (my freewheeler, not the wife) until the weather turns decent.
Not here, I just went to the HD Dealer in Calgary this morning on the Trans Canada. Snowing like hell and about two dozen cars and trucks in the ditches. Double that amount on the way home..
Madmiles, this was the worst Canadian winter I can ever remember and I'm 60 years old. Coldest, snowiest and longest. Without a snowblower my back would be broken. It's still hanging on I've only had 3 rides 200 kilometers in total. Last week was 18 degrees and beautiful one day, I got a few hours in saddle this Easter morning 1 degree and raining. It will come the nice weather...eventually. Happy Easter all.
Hello SGS, Thank you and happy Easter to you.
What part of the country are you in that you've already been riding?
I was running my snow blower for two hours Friday to clear the driveway, and the windrow the snow plow left in front of it, so the HD dealer could come and pick up my trade in. I'm a decade and a half older and can remember winter lasting well into may a couple years, but every year it seems that winter just drags on and on. I drove my 68 Firebird on March 8th, my birthday, last year and wished I could do the same this year. After years and $$$$$$$$ restomoding it I don't take it out until the sand and salt is mostly off the roads. But we are having snow all day and night, Looks like another week or two before I get the Bike or the Bird out.
@MADMILES, I'm in the Toronto area, born raised and settled. 68 Firebird! WoW that is not a very common old hot rod/muscle car and you don't see many in good shape either - good for you, I had a 1981 Trans Am in 1986, fun car. I wished I had the 6.6 liter naturally aspirated, but made a mistake of the turbo they came out with - total piece of $heit engine. I don't blame you for not wanting salt on the Bird. I'd love to see pics of that car. It's a labor of love and time doing a restomoding <-- That sounds interesting as I like resto mods better so you have the old car looks with new modern HP and amenities. On a side note a good friend of mine, his buddy is selling a 63 split window Vett, 4 speed manual all matching numbers here for $270,000 !! I've seen it in person it's beyond belief, it's won almost every Vett show in North America, he's a judge in Corvette competitions I'm told. I bet it's sold it went up for sale a few weeks ago, not many in the world like that with 2 owners. Not my cup of tea, I'd be afraid to drive it and maintain it. I will get a C7 rag top manual one day when my bike is too much for me or ???
I’m in Saskatoon and winter here was mild and easy going. Even the long stretch of -30s at Christmas time was quite short. Worked outside most of it as usual.
saying that I’m finding myself staring out the window at the snow melting sloooowly away. Last year I was on the road April 11, year before was beginning of April as well. Hoping she won’t make me wait much longer this year.
Car looks basically stock, from a few feet away. I punched out the 428 to 464, and filled it with some improved parts. Kept the Horse Power reasonable at 535, but I made 600 pounds foot torque so I wouldn't have to gear down from overdrive to high going over the mountain passes.
Not that I mind shifting the TKO 600 is pretty smooth. If I knew how I'd send you some picks,
About 45 years ago I worked at Competition Corvette in Calgary. I know 63 splits. 67 with the 427 and the stingray hood was my fave.
Last time I was in Saskatoon it was -35 I was heading north. I spent a couple years working up at La Ronge for Athabasca airways. Had my Panhead up there.
