Default CV on a shovel head

Here's one for you all. I put a 1990 big twin cv on my 1982 shovel head with points ignition and Andrews J grind cam and 80 cubic inches. It also has a K&N filter and Paughco pipes. The only I can get it to run is with a 205 main and a 54 slow jet. It also has one brass #4 washer under the needle. Is there any secret to get it to run any leaner?

The CV40 absolutely will not tolerate vacuum/intake leaks. A butterfly carb is much more forgiving and will easily mask an intake leak. Until you've fixed that, anything else you do is a waste of time.

Did you find/buy a float? (Just saw your other thread) And what trouble were you having with the old one, leaking?

You should be able to run somewhere in the neighborhood of a 48/185 depending on the needle but again, only if the intake leaks are solved.

I just wanted to get a cv because I had always heard that they ran better. I have ordered a new float but it hasnt come in yet. I did put in a new four sided float needle valve. It was tricky getting it adjusted right. Id like to find a paper filter that fits my intake housing fit I cant find one. I have formed the opinion that the K&N is too free flowing. Id like to find a sponge type filter like I had before.

I run an oil bath (foam) on mine, works great. No such thing as "too free flowing" unless it's letting contaminants in the engine.

So long as you adjusted the float by the book, it should be fine. But whatever issue you have requiring float replacement, you'll have to re-check and/or adjust.

Got no idea how you have the intake plumbed but seriously, they will never act right with even a hint of an intake leak. If the heads are out of alignment that'll have to be corrected.

I'm running a 1340 Evo. Came with a butterfly and when I converted to a CV years ago and got the bugs worked out, my power was night and day difference and fuel mileage increased 30%

Bike must be drowning with a 54/205 setup.
I have a shovel with a CV and I run 48/185 with a CVP velocity needle.
This needle just plain works. No shimming, just drop it in.

I ordered a new float just in case. I have the intake plumbed with brand new rubber boots using the stock clamps. if these arent good enough do they need a bead of rtv? I was looking for an oil bath intake but I havnt found one yet.

i run a 45/200 in my sport. i run on the rich side since this is built for high speed and do not want a lean out but it will run happily with a 44/180.
do you set the float using an angle gauge? follow the fsm.
a lot of people will drill the slide lift port but that can lead to oscillation issues. the diaphragm could be leaking but you can just replace it and not the whole side, easy to do.
on my 1974 super-glide i ran the mikuni vm round slide, go for a 40mm. i ran a vm 38 on my 1974 xlch and still have it. easy to setup and a great start circuit.

I don’t think my slide leaks because I can reach in with my finger and lift it up and down and can hear the air passing through the hole. I’m still thinking that the K&N filter is too free flowing and forcing me to run rich. I want to find a regular old foam filter and see what happens.
