I've been changing jets, emulsion tubes and jet needles trying to get my carb tuned just right, according to the plug color and my seat of the pants dyno. The build is 95", Andrews 26A cam and headwork with 9.6 cr. My latest setup is this: '88 sporty needle, 48 slow jet, 190 main,a/f 2-1/2 turns out. All other parts are stock, although when I took the emulsion tube out, I noticed that it had slightly bigger holes and a differert pattern than stock so the previous owner must have made some modifications, It also had a 5mahr jet needle in it which I believe is a Keihin number. I put a stock emulsion tube back in. After my recent run I pulled the front plug and it was -off white, eggshell, not a light tan or gray that I read I should be shooting for. My question is this; has anyone tried using the DynoJet thunderslide, the plastic one that has some bigger holes in it? I hear alot of negatives about the thunderslide kit without any real reasons why it isn't any good except for the real or imagined lower gas mileage. The thing that concerns me is using a plastic part that comes into contact with ethanol in the gas. Can't get 100% gas anymore around here. Should be quicker throttle response with a lighter slide though, shouldn't it?
I have been using the dynojet thunderslide kit for years now. I had it dyno tuned and the best mileage I could get was around 40mpg. I got frustrated with everyone else bragging on low 50 mpg on modified motors and decided to take the carb back to stock parts using the joe minton suggested stock carb modifications of 88 sporty N65C needle, polished and radiused slide, drilled hole to 1/8 inch and a slightly shorter TS spring. I also removed the thunder nozzle and went back to the stock configuration. now I am getting a solid 35 mpg! so all of this backfired. also the dyno tuner spent over 9 hours on this bike taking the carb off 15X changing parts to try to dial it in. what a mistake. now, I am contemplating going back to the thunderslide kit. at least I was getting better mileage and better throttle response with that plastic slide. no issues with fuel degradation of the plastic either.
I just happened to be sitting down here in my basement bar, watching football, and was surfing the forum during commercials. Let me tell you how it all worked out with my carb. I ended up going with all the parts included with the DJ thunderslide kit because that kit gave me the best seat-of-the-pants performance. Being the skeptic that I am, once I figured I had the carb "dialed in" I took it to a local dyno guy, JD'S cycleworks, who is one of the most respected tuners and builders in the mid-atlantic region. I had a 48 pilot and 195 main along with the dynojet kit going in to the dyno and after he did 8 runs, he ended up with the 48 and a 200 main in my build which is detailed above. I was concerned about the a/f ratio going in, he got it to 13.6/1which is smack-on, he said it was close to that when he started tuning. The dyno tune cost me $150.00.My dyno sheet with a/f mix is posted in the softail forum.A couple months ago I checked my mileage and it was 39.8 MPG. I am happy with that because the bike runs goooood and besides, my Dodge Ram hemi only gets around 12. As long as your plugs look good and the a/f is good,do you want 50 MPG or a bike that jumps? If the bike isn't running too lean or rich, what more can you do about your gas mileage?
My Evo is stock. The P.O. had installed the DJ kit. I changed the mufflers and then started tinkering with needles adjustment, jets and a/f mix. I'm tire of messing with it trying to get decent mpg. I ride conservatively anyhow, and I want a greater fuel range. So I'm going back to a near-stock set up. If you want the plastic slide and jets I have, I'll sell them to you cheap, once I get my carb tuned in with stock parts.
If you want to get the DJ Thunderslide kit Dyno tuned, make sure the Dyno shop that does it has specific experience with this kit. Otherwise you'll be paying someone to learn how to do it. (don't ask me how I know this).
Some folks use this kit and have no complaints at all.
