Default Generic Dyno Jet Kit

Someone gave me 3 boxes of Harley parts the other day, odds and sods that they had collected over the years and I had time to look through them today.

What caught my eye was a generic Dyno Jet Kit...It was missing a circlip and only had one jet with it, a 180 but the emulsion tube and needles were there so I thought I would give it a try.

First time out it was epic low down but was clearly too weak on the needle and main so I drilled the jet out to 2mm, dropped the circlip one notch and in the gathering gloom I tried it again...Yeehaa! what a difference! Bike feels looser and longer-legged...pulls like a train and is much smoother in the transition onto the needle....must be worth a few HP.

Verdict...do it!!!

How does it do on fuel?

I am not disputing your 'seat of pants' meter or its new found appearl, but one of the criticism of the Dynojet system was always that it made the bike thirsty.

I have no direct experience except to say that the kit does mix and match with OEM jets. I tried once with, like you, a box of bits I was given.

I have 2 of these kits on my work bench. Mine didn't run great with it installed. But I've been unable to dial the carb in right since removing it but mine runs crisper without it. My gas mileage was 40 or so.

No idea what the gas mileage is yet but I will test that and report back during the week when this storm has passed over....I do however subscribe to the view that $$$ = HP so its gonna use more gas.

I tried one on my Evo Wide Glide and never could get it to run right, went like a cut cat but stumbled like crazy if you weren't wringing its neck. On my Twin Cam it went right straight away.

Well I promised to do some testing and get back to you but its been a mission as the day job has been flat-tack...but here is what happened.

With a 185 main jet and the needle clip on the third notch down it ran real lame....like it was lean or something so I went to a 200 main and dropped the needle clip one notch and the thing ran like a raped ape....serious gains in HP and Torque which put a smile on my face for sure.

Then I ran onto reserve after only 90 miles and the smile faded.

Plugs were dark brown at the tip but black as everywhere else so I dropped the idle jet down from a 48 to a 45 and eventually a 42.

This improved my fuel consumption from 29 miles to the imperial gallon back up to 30...which was still reason to weep...

I swapped the main jet to a 190 and it crept up to 31mpg (I was getting 38mpg when it was stock) and eventually went back to 3rd notch down on the needle, kept the 42 idle jet but changed the ultima air cleaner for a K&N and now its still running like a cut-cat and is giving around 36-37mpg....like I said "dollars equals horsepower".

I am happy though.

I used one on my Glide early in it's life and also my TC88 Dyna, both with complete satisfaction. I have more recently heard them knocked, although I don't recall why.

Thanks for the update. Spanner.

Partly fuel consumption as they give more power when running too rich and partly because some come with a selection of needles and getting the right combo can be a mission.

I just rang my local Indy and asked for some starting settings and he said to use the fattest needle in the kit.

If I have to go bar-hopping in the summer I will raise the needle as its a hoot to ride when you ignore the shocking gas mileage in that configuration.

This is some pretty good info for me, I bought a bike that didn't idle correctly and the accelerator pump ripped on my ride home! So, without a "baseline" for performance I rebuilt the carb only to find it had the dynojet kit in it.
Current setup: 4th slot for the clip and three washers, 48 idle jet, 180 main. I didn't get and of the other jets with it so I am going to have limited tuning options unless I buy some more jets!

That seems completely OTT to me...is it 4th clip from the top or the bottom and where are the washers sitting?

Is there a small spacer underneath the plastic piece that sits under the spring and holds the needle in place?
