I am looking at purchasing a 1994 Heritage Softail in great condition with 9500 miles for 10K. Is this a good deal or should I look at something newer if I ever sale it later. The dealership persuaded me to stay away from the 80" EVO because of cat and mouse problems (you fix one, find another). Is this true or should I feel good about picking up the 94 FLSTN and save big money. Any comments well appreciated.
I would say buy it. The dealer is full of it. The "evo" lution was the HD's saving grace. If it were not for it, the motor company would have bellied up a long time ago. How many shovels do you see out there runnin'? The evo is and still is the strongest motor out there, bar none, been out since 84, and stillbeing produced. All of your big builders still use them. I would say that 10 K is a fair price if it is cosmetically correct, LOL, what ever that means. Sounds like a new bike to me 9.5 K miles on it. Sounds like a cream puff. Cheap price too. Evo's rule man. BTW, a flstn is still an evo, same motor, an 80. How much is the flstn?
I am looking at the options, and I am wondering whether a 96" harley motor would suffice for a custom, or If I am better to just go outside the box and go after a different maker of a 110" to 114" motor. I already have a harley (1200 sportster), so I care less if people give me **** for not riding a harley, but what am i goign to find more cost effective and reliable?
Thansk in advance for your advice!
If you buy a 96" Evo S&S or Ultama and set it up right (carb, pipes) it will run circles around any new HD96" and maybe some of the SVO big engines.

Nothing wrong with the EVO at all. Almost all of the custom motors discussed on this thread are EVO based. As a stocker they're one of the most reliable motors ever put in a motorcycle.
