I was looking at a used bike . The vin # was on a piece flat stock and welded to the frame with a hd vin #. I know it is not a hd frame because it is a hard tail and the Vin # is not stamped into the frame. The bike has a bill of sale and it is a 84 Sportster. The motor vin # I did not lok for Is their any problem with this bike if i ever get pulled over or inspecting this bike. Thanks in N.J.
If you know it is not a harley frame, and does not have a title, only a bill of sale,I think you could be opening a can of worms? Is the bike at a dealership?
Isn't a title and the bill of sale the samething?. Also it is a person selling this bike. It has me hooked on this bike. A chopperwith a ironhead motor. the bike says 84 on the title, custom frame
even if the bike has a bill or sale or a title and the frame has been modified, or changed and the vin has been essentially put on another frame via welding a different plate with the harley vin on it, that is fraud. I asked a question like this earlier, you can get around it, but if you are caught, it could cause LOTS of problems. Not to mention someone knowledgable will know that is isn't a 84 sportster?
Hello-(new to board)
A title and Bill of sale are quite different. though in some states, a bike of a certain age no longer needs a title, Georgia for instance. (if that still applies) I would need a title here in NC. In some states, they may require you to restamp the frame to match the engine, in the case of using a custom frame. My custom has both title (which matches the engine) and MSO from Paugho (which matches the frame)...i just use the title, but officially, NC uses frame numbers. They use engine numbers on older models with no frame number.
My first Harley was a Sporty i bought for 800.00. All complete, except a sheared flywheel woodruff key, if i remember correctly. I was just a kid, but my more experienced biker friend promptly pointed out the ground numbers on the cases when i got it home. I had no idea?!
Personally, i wouldnt buy any bike without a rightous title in this state. I wouldnt even buy a frame without a MSO.
