There is one good quality kit that you can use with really good results. The HeartlandUSA 2-5-0 wide tire kit. www.heartlandbiker.com If your interested in this kit, I can point you to a gentleman in NJ who has the best prices on these kits.
The kit comes with a new swingarm, curved billet struts(Chrome or black),axle, primary offset spacer and all needed hardware. Its the best kit on the market I have delt with. True bolt on and no odd installation issues. Turn-in both left to right is near factory. Be aware due to the larger rear tire, turn in will take a bit more effort than if your using a stock 150 tire naturally. The bike is surprisingly well balanced with this kit, an RSD tranny is not needed at all. And don't waste your time on those open style belt primaries. They may look cool, but they don't add anything at all in terms of performance, and many hurt your turn in lean angle to the left side and depending on weight may adversely affect your handling. The shifting action also deteriorates when the dry clutch pack heats up. They may be good for short drag races, but they are poor setups for street bikes.
You said you know someone in NJ with good prices on these kits, I was wondering if you could pass that info on to me? Really wanting to get one of these kits for myself. Thanks
I'm in the middle of putting on a Heartland 2FIVE0 kit on an 06 Softail Standard. The kit is really nice, it comes with a longer trans main shaft, all your necessary spacers and the directions are pretty easy. A little frame modification to make clearance for swingarm, but pretty straight forward. I'll post in a few weeks when it's back on the road.
I have to disagree with you about the open belt primary, I've been riding mine for 4 years with it, and have never had a problem.
Couple of questions for those doing or done the 250 conversion:
1. anyone had trouble with belt tension? - i have my deuce with the new swingarm in and using a new 70 tooth pulley with the std 135 tooth belt i have the rear wheel back as far as it will go in the axle adjuster slot but the belt is still way loose - the shocks are not in place yet so bike is bottomed out - anyone any ideas ?
2. are any of you modifying the heartland fender to show more of the tyre- especially the owner of the "brutal" softail pictured earlier
We're running a chain final drive, not a belt so we didn't have any issues there. As far as the fender mounting goes, we're going with the longer of the heartland fenders this time.
If you run into anything else, let me know.
