1955 Rigid Frame build
this is my first time posting to the site, I've been reading the different forums for a few days now and decided I would join. I have aquired a 1955 Harley Rigid Frame rolling chassis. I am trying to find out exactly what I will need to title my bike since the frame did not come with VIN's when it was made. I have no motor or tranny yet, been putting it off until I get more info on registering. I've been told that I have to have a pre 1970 motor with a title and I've been told I can plant any motor in my chassis as long as the motor has a title with matching numbers. I have a notorized BOS with the chassis but no other paper work. I live in Hillsborough County Florida if that is of importance...thank you in advance for your advice, I look forward to learning from you guys!
If it was the frame is not the titled part the motor would have been titled. Pre 70 is titled motors.
Now if you buy a new motor it will not come with a title.
So lets figgure out how to work this out. If you have a frame with a mso, and you get a motor with a title pre 70 you can use that to tag the bike. If you have a mso for the frame and buy a after 70 motor make sure you get a bill of sale or mso for the motor and every other component. The dhsmv will want to see all paperwork and you will have to apply for a "assembled from parts title" and go through inspection so that they can make sure your parts are not stolen. Then you will have to pay for taxes on the bike and parts and registration fees. It sounds a lot harder than it actually is. I have done it a few times and I am going to be going through it again here just because I am switching a frame on a bike I already have
oh and as far as any motor fitting in that frame.......don't count on it. I have put evo motor into older frames and it can be done but needs some modifications. (not super hard) (like the seat post downtube) A twincam will not fit in that frame easily but it can be done. If it is a actual 55 rigid frame Harley then a shovel and pan will fit no problem and it probably is set up to run a four speed
