You can use it as a drying aid. Some will have extra "Stuff" in it that can add a very small amount of protection. Same with gloss.
Gloss comes from machine polishing.

I really like HD's Cleaner and Polish spray foam. I was the guy that rolled my eyes when someone was telling me about it but damn, the stuff really work s great. Just get some nice micro fiber cloths. Works on everything to. At $10 a can for a few months, bike looks like new still. I don't like to use water if I don't have to. Only wash if I get caught in the rain or it's full of dust, which doesn't happen very often. S100 makes a wax/detail foam thats very similar.

ethanol, propane, butane.....the propellants make me nervous brother

For whatever reason aerosol cans are always flammable. If the content doesn't burn the propellant does and vis versa.

My son gave me some Adams pink detail spray and i really like this stuff. Easy on and off and i use it to remove bugs and shines up nicely.
