Default cleaning Engine

I'm sure this has been asked many times, but wondering how to clean my black engine? I'm not afraid of using water, but it seems to have brown dust that cannot be removed. I have tried auto wash soap and soaked it but to no avail. any tips would help. Thanks

Brown dust? Is it rust? How could it have gotten brown dust that can not be removed? I am confused with this. I use Honda Brite on my engine with water.

Im guseeing by where you live Texas? it just might be dirt or dust from your area? Do you have a water softner on your house or water line your using? That might help?

I live near in Raymondville, just north of Harlingen. Lots of farmland here and wide open spaces. The dust is always blowing. It collects wherever there may be a little oil or grease residue. I tried pre-soaking with car soap and it does not dissolve grease or remove dirt. I did seem to have pretty good luck with citrus cleaner from Wally. I do have a water softner too. Thanks for the tips.. I'll keep checking back.

FOR WHAT IT"S WORTH
If you are really concerned about keeping the engine/bike clean you may want to avoid using water from the house if you have a water softner. Yep! The salt does corrode over a period of time. Just adding my.02 cents worth.
