Default Calcium Chloride

Rode through construction , I believe had a dust agent on it. when I went through it , it was mud . thanks to the big rain in Montana a week or so ago. When I got to Great Falls that evening , 2hours later, I washed my bike to notice black spots all over my engine cases. I have tried soap and water, degreaser , vinagar and spay 9. nothing will take it off. with a tooth brush ! any ideas on what a person can use .?

thanks

Bandit

I doubt that it's from calcium chloride. That would more than likely leave white-ish spots.

I'm not sure how to help you with the black spots. Hopefully someone else will know.

Try some S-100 Engine Brightener. If it were me and based on my experience with Calcium Chloride used to keep dust down, I'd find a place to wash that puppy good. Every nook and cranny with the bags off, seat off but electronics covered, etc. Despite what some people say buy S-100 or some other total bike cleaner that creeps into the areas you cannot reach by hand and wash it again. Follow the directions and it works excellent! Then spray the motor down with WD40 or S-100 engine brightener. The engine brightener and total cycle cleaner are two different S-100 products. Calcium chloride is some corrosive stuff and it keeps on attacking all those vulnerable spots that you can't see or get to and it does not just wash off easy with a hose. No scare tactic here, its bad stuff.

No question that it is calcium chloride, same stuff they use as a de-icer in winter. As said, very corrosive.

I worked for a small outfit that made calcium chloride, Its was made form Lime Stone and (Muriatic acid/Hydrochloric acid). I can tell you this that Leather does not stand a chance with this stuff. It will dry out leather and shrink the **** out of it. and as for some metals ya it will play hell on it to.
That was 27 yrs ago for me. They used it for de-icer/dust control/brining cherries maraschino style/and concrete for faster set up

It won't burn off if its Calcium Chloride damage. It will keep eating till there is no more Calcium Chloride there to work. The stuff ruined my best friends brand new 4 day old Springer on a long trip in the same situation. Construction zone. It splattered on wet cause they just sprayed and he didn't wash it off for a few hours till we got to the motel. I refused to drive through the zone and found a way around. I know the stuff cause I live on miles of Vermont Gravel roads and got a petition together and fought the town with neighbors so they would no longer use the stuff on our road. It ruined many a vehicle. Thankfully in my town they were not against saving some money. We chose dust over damage. Frankly, we all live far enough off the road and in the woods that its the nature of the beast. Try soaking it down with a few over night coats of WD-40 then wash the motor down in between with the S-100 total cycle cleaner. Good luck!

Default If it is Calcium Chloride, your engine cosmetics are just the beginning

You will need to rinse the entire under side of your tins (and I mean really rinse) That crap gets in to the fender tips and anywhere else where the paint starts and stops, and starts to corrode the paint within a couple of months. Watch for bubbling. We get the same crap here all winter long now.
