speedo going crazy

speedo going crazy
My speedo is off like 60 mph.
If im crawling to a stop says im doing 60 if im driving fwy says im down 120+ i dont know where to even start.
Any suggestions

Clean and tighten battery cables first.. Then speed sensor, check for fault codes.

Sensor issues
Lots of times the speed sensor in the trans gets a build up of metal shavings on it (its magnetic) one bolt and it pulls right out. clean it off an stick it back in and check it, should be ok after that, if not probably gonna need a new sensor.

Speedometer Issues
If it is bouncing, then it is probably failure of the switch on the transmission OR IF YOU HAVE METAL in the transmission, especially if it continues to get worse and the end result will be there is a failure of the bearings in the gearbox.. Pull the sensor and check for metal, if no metal go buy a NEW sensor from Harley, never trouble shoot with off brands. If it has metal, overhaul the transmission PERIOD something is wrong and IF you continue to ride it the cost WILL GO UP TO A POINT you will be paying for a Baker six speed at the same price as overhauling the transmission, only if the case is still good if not you should have bought the Baker trans and get another gear. If this does not fix the problem, then you move upstream; wiring, speedometer. Did you ever replace the speedometer.........if so that is likely to be the problem, so even though this is not available from Harley or if you have people in the industry with one on their bike borrow it for a ride and see what happens. If the speedometer being accurate is your only problem, there is a speedo adjuster you can purchase (sorry dont have the part number right now) that you can slave between the sensor and the harness, putting it under the seat and have it hang out and increase or decrease the speed using your phone gps, e.g. wase, speed gps, etc apps and it is dead nuts on. I have spent 10K on my 2001 dyna FXDX trans, as I am a very aggressive rider but not abusive in shifting, using the clutch but going through canyons and long straightaways. This is a very SIMPLIX system and what I have told you are all of my lessons over the past three years dealing with this very potentially costly endeavor. Hope this helps!!
