Default carb help

2001 fxdwg
88 twin cam
V&H long shots with quiet baffles ( not really quiet)
arlen ness
big sucker.

I pulled and rebuilt the carb . I bought my parts from Cv performance.
I bought the premium tuners kit , see here,http://www.cv-performance.com/harley...um-tuners-kit/

I re-jetted using the supplied instructions for stage one .
original slow jet was a 46. I installed a 48
original main jet was a 190 . I installed a 195
I installed a new slide
I installed a new needle form the kit .
I installed a new spring from the kit ( lighter than stock )
I did not replace the plugs , they have about 5k on them.
as stated I rebuilt the carb and also replaced the accelerator pump parts.

It runs better with the exception of....

coughs off idle ... sometimes a really loud sharp pop.
the instructions stated the mixture screw sweet spot for twin cam 88's being about 2&1/8 turns out.

did propane check for intake leaks and do not believe there are any .

after taking the adjustment screw 3 to 3&1/8 out its perfect.

Is this too much? is my jetting off? intake leak ? or is it OK?

The weather is bad right now . I haven't had a chance to ride it since going to 3+ but its much better off idle. At 2&1/2 it ran ok but I got those coughs consistently

Also , I already had the big shots ,but changed from an OEM air cleaner to the big sucker . the whole tone of the bike is different . I assume this is normal .

any help is appreciated.

Odd that they would suggest 2 1/8 turns.
Our standard here is 2 1/2-3 turns out when setting up a CV carb.
That setting works very well.

Well, a friend who's been around and worked around bikes forever said to start at three .

That seems to be about right.

I suppose I can watch the plugs over time to get an idea. ?

Thanks
Read it.

I think I just got hyper focused on the 2&1/8 turns. I also was concerned about intake leaks but I spent a lot of time with the propane and get zero reaction .I went over the entire manifold, the butterfly shaft and the vacuum hose to the petcock.

I was also concerned going with a 48 slow jet asnow I see some are saying that could be too much.

I will say that all in all its a giant improvement over what I had.

Google "Joe Minton" he has some good writings on tuning the the carb on the Harley Davidsons. I've used his suggestions and I think the #48 slow jet is a bit too much. But that's just my opinion and I've used the Joe Minton set up since about 2006 with no problems. There a few ways of doing this setup, you have to find one that works for you.

I had the same issue you have. I was able to get rid of it by using an adjustable needle. I put the cv carb kit on and it's been horrible and can't dial it in. I actually asked for a refund and they won't. I can stall leaving a stop sign if I'm not careful. I'm considering switching back off the cv kit and putting the needle spring and emulsion tube on eBay. They have been absolutely no help and you and I aren't the first to have this issue.

Don't yet. I was reading that people with the n65c needle sometimes put a #4 brass washer under the needle giving the same result as dropping the clip on an adjustable needle. The needle we have is the same as that needle. If I was you I would do that and readjust your idle mix screw and stick with 45 or 46 pilot and see what happens.

I have two adjustable needles in my parts box with different tips but I don't know if they are compatible with the cv emulsion.

Try this and let me know what happens I have a feeling this will solve your problem and mine.
