Default same problem

Ya kno, i've had the same problem. Rebuilt the starter with the new gear drive and it didn't happen as much in the beginning, and then all of a sudden its doing it again. Im willing to bet its the crank gear thats the problem in both cases..........curious to hear other peoples responses......

Did you check if your main shaft was bent? If its bent sometime the clutch hub wobbles and can hit the starter aand will create a bind on the starter pinion and create some noise.

Did not check runout on mainshaft... wouldn't think it would be out of spec with only 20k on bike.... found a missing tooth and ground down teeth on pinion gear on the clutch shell! Has anyone ever seen this before?

Are you the first owner since new? if your not maybe the first owner beat on the bike and bent the main shaft. The only thing i can think of would be a bent shaft

Does it do it every time?, this may sound crazy but my 07 FXD has done something similar twice, once the battery cable had work loose and it would not have a good contact and it would make a grinding sound sometimes when I hit the starter, the second time the ground was loose. Mine was weird and I finally figured it out when riding, if I turned right the bike would sputter like it wanted to shut off. Probably not it but worth a look

Had a similar issue on neighbour's 06 Street Glide... starter would grind once in a while, found the back side of the ring gear was ground pretty good. Only thing that comes to mind was PO had hit the starter button while engine was already running, burred up the teeth a bit, which prevented the starter from engaging fully whenever in that 'spot' Situation progressively got worse over several years.

We bought a replacement ring gear kit (aftermarket only) and fixed it.
