it might be helpful in the rain, but I personally don't like abs on cars,, it makes a lot more sense on a bike because it might keep up on 2 wheels but it still increases you stopping distance.. yes you do stop a lot faster when your wheel lock up!! that's physics 101... ABS causes accidents!!!.. that's why they invented it so they could sale more parts from accidents...

in no way at all does abs help you stop faster!!! real world or on a track... THE FACT IS IT ACTUALLY DISABLES THE BRAKE Pressure to prevent your wheels from locking up so you don't skid out,, I REPEAT,, IT ACTUALLY DISABLES YOUR BRAKE AS YOUR TRYING TO APPLY IT!! that's insane if you ask me..

I hate ABS, it is simply the worst ever automotive innovation. it's a fact that it causes rear end accidents, I know that from personal experience., please notice rear end accidents are infact the most common type of accident.. because of ABS!!

With that said a good abs system is a nice tool to have. The KTM with the new Bosch system looks impressive.

If they all get this advanced my next bike will have this system.

but that would only work if you're braking way too hard in a turn,, it wouldn't prevent a slip out from loos of traction. no system could stop a motorcycle from sliding sideway on the rear wheel.

It's ABS for me. Even bought a new 2014 so I could have a better margin of safety.

I was in a bad collision last fall with a last minute left hand turning car and I can remember vividly hitting my brakes and having the rear tire skid on the loose gravel on the roadway. I released and reapplied them to avoid having the bike loosing traction by continuing to skid while attempting an emergency stop. If I had even 4 to 6 more inches of roadway I would have avoided the collision. And I believe ABS would have saved me and my wife from the injuries we sustained.

I've done a lot of reading and watched a lot of videos showing with and without situations. Never once did a non-ABS stop quicker than an ABS. The non-ABS all lost control especially in real life situations you find on the roadway.

I can also tell you from my experience that any issues in a curve and you are in trouble. After hitting a series of pot holes on a corner and having to straighten the bike up I wound up driving through a ditch before getting stopped. Guess that's why I have a lot of respect for taking it easy in the corners. I ride the roads, not race them, these days and try to give myself all the safety margins I can get..

You're full of ****. It does not disable your brakes, it pulses them roughly seven times a second, depending on the exact model and system. It will increase your stopping distance if you have spent the many, many hours to master threshold braking on your motorcycle and are stopping on a surface that you know is clean and dry, like a racetrack. If you haven't done that, ABS will stop you faster. And even if you have, one spot of oil and your wheel's locked up.
The idea that a locked wheel will stop you faster than a rolling one is horseshit. You're dealing with two types of friction, static and kinetic. When a tire rolls, rather than slides, you're dealing with static friction between the tire and the asphalt. If it's sliding, you're dealing with kinetic friction. Static friction will make the tire slow down faster. Physics 101?

OP, ABS isn't necessary, but it's good peace of mind. As long as you know how to brake without it, so you don't rely on it, you'll be fine. In a panic situation, it's one less thing to worry about.

Ummm....huh ??
It does not "cause" accidents. It can help prevent them. I don't know how skidding uncontrollably is safe and does not cause accidents.
Most rear end accidents are from people operating a vehicle with their heads up their asses. You know...distracted driving/riding, tail gating, etc.
Yep...rear end accidents never happened before the invention of ABS....

That's something I forgot to add.
LF, you can blame ABS all you want for the wrecks you've apparently been in, but somehow I'm highly skeptical the outcome would've been better without ABS.

if it pulses your brakes that means it's disabling them, which increases stopping distance. Static friction is greater than kinetic, therefore a locked up wheel does produce more friction.. again reducing stopping distance,, that's why the wheel locks up when you hit the brakes hard, because it's producing the maximum braking force possible, which ABS prevents from happening. Your statements are totally ignorant & inaccurate, btw I do have a mechanical engineering degree. I aint that smart, but I know basic physics.

abs does not improve stopping distance, it does the opposite in order to improve vehicle control. these arguments than abs does not increase stopping distance just don't add up, it's impossible,, it's all marketing BS to sale you that $700 option and higher insurance & parts when your in a rear end accident.

have you ever been in a car in snow & tried to stop but the abs won't let brakes do there job? happens all the time.. it does the same thing on dry pavement too, I'd much rather lock the tires up & skid in a straight line with no harm done that to rear end another vehicle,

how many rear accidents do you see vs, accidents caused by skidding out of control??

I do agree that abs makes more logical sense on a MC, than an auto, but I do not like the idea of a computer disabling the brakes when I'm trying to stop to prevent an accident.... there is no worse driving scenario than trying to stop your Vehicle ASAP and the ABS is releasing the brakes, that plains sucks..

I rest my case.

Guess we've covered both sides of the rear wheel skid pros and cons.
Now let's consider "front wheel" lockup. Braking hard and having the front end wash out on you....not fun.
