I'm new to the forum and harleys but not new to turning a wrench. I put new bars on my 12 street bob. The bike fired up with no problems following the bar install. . I had bought different turn signals and I thought I was splicing them into the correct spare plug in the back bone. I was using posi taps. So since I don't believe I had the right wires the turn signals obv didn't work so I took off the posi taps and put the wiring back into the backbone. I went to go for a ride today and the I am getting intermittent fuel pump prime, and no response from my controls. The headlight will not switch to brights, neither turn signal works and no start. Any idea what may have happened?
I would start by checking all the connections in the backbone to verify that you didn't knock them apart when you stuff the other wires back in. Then I would check the fuses in the fuse box, if you blew one, you might have a short somewhat in the harness where you were working. Seeing that everything was working after the install, I would guess your short isn't a pinched wire in the control housings, so that a plus, ones less thing to trouble shoot.
I am not sure if the 12' has the CANBUS system (I can't help you with these) or not, but if it isn't and its the regular wiring system, the wires that would be used for your turn sigs would be the two sets three wires connections that contain one blue wire, one black wire each and the third wire will either be brown or purple (they might have a white stripe also). The black wire is the ground, the blue wire is the running light and the brown and purple wires are your turn signal.
I think I pinched a wire putting my controls back on. I have to check each one with an ohm meter today. Would a pinched wire to the right hand controls cause the speedo/dash to not light up? I'm waiting on a service manual from the dealership but they said it'll be next week before they have one in for me. Anyone have a wiring diagram for the controls?
