I am very intrigued with this this...has anyone tried one of these or know anyone that has?

And what's your opinion on them?

I haven't used one and don't know of anyone who ran one on their bike. Just know someone who swore by his on his modded Mustang.
There of course would be pros & cons. They are supposed to be superior in filtration. Never have to buy another filter (obviously).
Con that I can think of would be longer turnaround time on servicing. Since you would clean it Instead of tossing it and slapping another on.

I dont mind spending the extra time cleaning it out. I have all my vehicles with k&n filters. I do like the fact of not having to throw out an oil filter or air filter everytime i do service. I'm not a crazy environmentalist but i do try to do what can.

If the extra time is nothing to you (which I agree), then no cons that I can think of then.
I have the K & N air filter too. Ran them in the past too. I like not having to run down and buy filters every time. I can clean filters any time!

It's a simple reality,
Unless you have high pressure solvent equipment to do a proper cleaning you'll never get all the fine particulate out of a reusable oil filter.
If, like many of us, and are a person concerned about environmental issues bring all used oil and filters to a local recycle center.
New clean oil and New Clean filter every time.

I'm a dumbass....I originally responded to the OP about an air cleaner, when he was asking about an oil filter.

The oil filter provides some extra power (lower drag on oil pump), it cleans the oil better, and reduces dry start-ups, it does run a tad cooler. It does take more time to clean that just replacing with a new filter. And it is much more expensive.

So it makes sense to use if one or more of the following are relevant to you-

1. Getting every last bit of power

2. Having the best possible lubrication

3. A high mileage rider

#2 & #3 are me, so I have them on my bikes.

i've never used a reusable oil filter, so i'm no expert. but, IMO a little simple math tells me this:
Reusable oil filter from DK Custom: $120
optional replacement filter: $89
K&N filter: $15

now divide: 120/15 = 8
or optionally: 210/15 = 14 (round up)

Assuming oil changes at every 5000 miles, multiply:
8 x 5000 = 40,000
or 14 x 5000 = 70,000

so basically, the reusable filter pays for itself after 40k miles, or 70k if you opted to buy the replacement filter to always have one ready to go.

this of course doesn't apply to those who do oil changes sooner than 5k miles.

like i said, just my opinion. if you have the money to spare, by all means

I've been running permanent oil filters on my HD's and sport bikes for years, I'm sold on them and there is no downside to using them. You're not buying any more oil filters and the permanent filter provides superior filtration and higher flow rates, reduced oil pump drag, offers magnetic pre-filtering, the billet outer housing will aid in cooling and has a built in 17mm nut for easy on/off, the filters are beautifully made and you're no longer tossing old oil filters in the land fill. To those who may say, 'but the HD filter is 5 microns!' you should Google up filter ratings absolute vs nominal and you'll discover the permanent filter is superior in filtration capability and that '5 micron' rating BS is just that...

Cleaning a permanent filter is simple and only takes a few moments, I use brake cleaner to spray the filter element, allow it to dry for a couple of minutes while I wipe down the billet housing then it's back on the bike. The only consumable on the filter is the quad ring, I get 6-7 changes before I need to change it out but those are cheap and easy to get from DK Custom

Here's a review of the FLO PCS permanent oil filter with some good images so you can see how things work, the DK Customs filter is the exact same quality: http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/flo-oil-filter

Looks good on my Wide Glide
