Exclamation '12 Wide Glide Ape Install???

Hey guys,

Going to do my Ape install of 14" Chubby 1 Outlawz this weekend. Before I go into it, I had a few questions I wanted to run by the forums elite:

1. When replacing the clutch cable, do you replace the transmission cover gasket/seal with a new one? Or do you just wipe it clean and place it back if its not damaged & in good shape?

2. When bleeding the front brake, you use Dot 4 fluid? Or any other brand recommended?

3. Did anyone do a good write up on the install? Any links?

My steps are going to be: Remove old bar & controls, cables. Remove tank. Replace clutch cable, solder new electrical cables & heat shrink, retrace the steps and put it back on, the good stuff. Including bleeding the brake, fishing wires through the new bar etc...

Thanks guys!

Just put on 16" apes on my 2013 wide glide. Didn't need to do any thing with the electrical. Wiring was long enough. Dot 4 is correct. I replaced the gasket, it's cheap.

So you just did the brake and clutch cable? That's awesome! That would be a much easier install, holding my fingers crossed. :-)

you might want to go to your dealer and check if they have a wiring extension so you dont have to solder. cant remember if they started in 12 or 13, but for my 13 super glide i got a plug and play wire extension for the control button wires. also, if you need to extend clutch and brake cables, don't forget to do throttle/ idle cables. if you've never replaced and/or adjusted these before, they can be a pain the first time around.

I bought the plug and play wiring extention, but then didn't need it and couldn't return it. Made by "Namz". My own fault for taking too long. Had to do throttle and idle as well.

You will have plenty of wire so no need for soldering and extensions. I reuse the transmission cover gasket 12,000 miles later and still no leaks. No need to remove the gas tank take the bolts out of the gas tank front and rear of the tank and remove the seat, then slide your gas tank back a few inches., this will give you plenty of room to get to the wires without taking the tank off. You will also need to take the fuel line a loose simply push up on the fixture pull down on the hose. I used Street Bob throttle and clutch cable I was able to use my stock brake cable.P.S. I have the 12 inch Outlaw z bars and I am NOT happy with the angle of my wrist ..... may be taking them off very soon.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

My gasket has less than 500 miles on it so I think it'll just look if its still go and reuse. I'll try to see if cables will fit, I know some members said their 14" were just a tiny bit too big for the original cables, it would be great if I don't have to solder I don't have that much patience :-).

Man now you got me thinking about the bars and wrist angle! We shall find out soon.
