Default First thread...ready to go stage 1 and looking for input

First thread here out of new member area. I am now riding an 06 fxdli and itching to get some more giddy up on this thing...Stage 1. I've done this on sportys but now need some experience from those with dyna etc. What's my best options and what exhaust/air filter combos seem to be worthwhile. I'm ready to go 2 into 1...new air filter and re map as needed. And...is the 2 into 1 worth it and all its cracked up to be?

Thx
Lock

To be honest you're probably going to get a million answers on whats the best setup. Thunderheader with Powervision, D&D with FP3 blah blah blah. To tell you the truth there probably isn't a right or wrong answer. Do whats best for you and what you want. Stage one breathers are pretty much the same ratio I assume so that would be down to which one you think looks the best with your style of bike. You already know 2-1 pipe is going to be better performing so now you just need to decide which one you want, sound and performance and looks will be your 3 criteria to research. Last but not least is tuner, this will be the most controversial subject. I can promise you one thing about tuners is you get what you pay for. Whether you get a Powervision or FP3 or SERT just make sure you do your research and make sure you know what your getting before you get it. I have the SERT but kinda wish I would have went Fp3 or Powervsion because SERT isn't very user friendly. If you trust your dealer to do the tuning then a SERT might be a good option, if you want to auto tune and tune yourself then go with one of the others. You will get good advice on here. Welcome and don't mind the turds that will say "use the search button" and then proceed to yell at you and possibly insult your mother or family pet. Lol
But lots of good info as you probably already know

The Patriot Defender 2 into 1 that is the performance darling on the Sportster forum is also available for the Dyna. For $345 it should be on your list.

I've seen them all over the net. Read mix reviews I think cuz they are lower priced.

I've got the S.E. EFI super tuner with the big sucker air filter in mine. My bike seems happy with it, I'm certainly happy with it.

This is what I got with just used eBay V&H Straight Shot slip-ons and a Big Sucker. The second curve is after a Power Vision dyno tune. This is on my '07 FXDL.

Like it's been said you will get a ton of different answers with none necessarily being right or wrong...

I think most would agree that the bulk of high flow AC's are about the same from a performance standpoint so simply go with what you like the looks of the most. Keep in mind if you do a ton of rain riding or dusty riding that perhaps you don't want an open style filter. I use a simple, reasonably priced DK Customs Outlaw 587. It's an open filter with lots of options for the cover.

I have had both the 2:2 pipes and just recently put on 2:1. I'd say that you feel a bit of a performance difference with the nod for the 2:1 being a bit smoother while rolling the throttle, along with increased hp/tq at wide open but that could simply be mental, or the difference between the pipes I had vs the new ones and not necessarily style related.

The difference is small enough that I would simply say to once again go with what you like the most in appearance and sound. Keep in mind that what may sound good and loud at first can get grating which is for the most part why I changed mine out. Also longer pipes that don't end right below your ears may be a consideration In the end I changed to a Supertrapp Supermeg. I like that I can have the tune adjusted for sound and power/torque based on the number of disks used. I find it quite a bit smoother than my previous pipes and I like the look as well. Mostly though I like the more mellow sound!

Tuners Just get the one that suits your needs best. I use the FP3 and it's been great, extremely user friendly. So are many of the others.

Have fun and post pics!

Sparky...Stage 1 is the first stage of an ever increasing problem. The problem being that you realize you want better performance and/more power out of your ride. Most of us have been confirmed as stage 1 and some stage 2. Just Joking here....

But for real...the stages are an order of operations for bringing out the most of your bike.

STAGE 1 upgrade is taking your relatively stock harley and adding a free breathing air filter instead of the restricting stock filter. Pair this with a better performing set of pipes...slip ons...or even better a 2 into 1 system. Properly re map the whole system to your riding needs/desires and you should have more torque...hp...overall happiness ...you name it.

STAGE 2 usually takes over with appropriately matched cams to compliment your riding preferences or whatever you're looking for from your ride. Ignition may also be played with as well but I've had ignition upgraded for stage one as well.
I can describe stage 3 but I have no personal experience here.

Maybe this helps?
