I have a vivid black Fat Bob in bad need of new tires. I found a local guy that going to give me a good price on powdercoating them, and I figured it would be good to do it at the same time.
I've seen a few photos and I think black wheels look great on the bike.
What kind of sheen/finish looks good on these? I'm guessing gloss, but looking for opinions, as it's hard to tell from the photos what finish they have.
I went with semi gloss black. I don't think full gloss looks good on wheels in general and especially not on ours. It's a nice middle ground between full on flat and gloss. Don't forget you'll need new bearings when you do this.
Would need to see a current pic of the bike to give a good opinion. Gloss black would be good if you do a 2 stage powdercoat making the lips gloss with the centers a matte silver or a combo like that.
Thanks for the comments. Here is a pic of the bike. I need to get some new ones without that crash bar and windscreen on it.
Two stage would look great, but I don't think I have the funds for that. $100 both wheels PC'd is a pretty good price for simple black I think.
I didn't realize the bearings weren't reusable, go OEM on those or is there a preferred kind?
As for the "theme", I'm going to try and tone down the chrome some. Not a full black out, but would like to replace the primary cover and some of the extras with black pieces.
I have the vivid black Fatboy Lo...I used Plasti-dip to see what I thought before I went to powder with them. The one thing Ive been thinking about is how the dullness of the rubber contrast with the rim themselves. My vote would be a semi-gloss/matte color for dipping. Having a gloss wheel with the dull rubber looks a little off to me, but to each his own!
My wheels are a satin-black, maybe what's been called semi-black. Smooth finish for ease of cleaning but in between gloss and flat.
Also, you can have the rear sprocket and the inner part of the brake disc done at the same time, they tape off the area on the brake disc where the brake pad contacts cause you don't want PC on that.
Go with Timken or All ***** for the bearings and with this
