Not sure what year/model you're working on, but this video shows a starter and solenoid replacement on a 2005 FXDX. I haven't watched it in detail, but hopefully it'll show you what you need.
One thing though, don't follow his advice re forcing the primary cover off by wedging screw drivers behind it by hityting them with a chunk of wood (good grief!). Just tap the cover a few times gently with a rawhide or plastic mallet, give it a gentle wiggle, and it'll come right off...
The newer bikes don't have to remove the Primary to remove the starter.
I just did my starter clutch replacement, piece of cake, and that boot can be a pain.
Just make sure to use some dielectric grease on the connection.
No biggie if it doesn't sit perfect.
