Default New tune or oil cooler?

I am riding to California in two weeks on I10. It is really hot through there right now and I was wondering if I should have my bike tuned or just add an oil cooler. The map is just canned from dynojet. I would like to do both but I can only do one.

Which would be best? I am also looking at making the trip at night. Thanks

A lot of unknowns with how good your canned map is. If you just have a Stage 1, then maybe the map is not too bad.

The engine gets the hottest in stop and go traffic not while cruising down the highway, so the best solution for that is cooling fans - I like my Wards Cooling Fans.

Thanks for the reply.
The map seems OK. I get a fair amount of deceleration pop. It runs a lot cooler than the stage one based on the amount of heat from the exhaust. I am sure it is not as good as it can be. Maybe it can get a little better milage and stay cool. I was trying to find an answer to help tip the scale one way or the other before I left.
I saw Phoenix was 112 most of this week.

I'm going to presume you're running a DynoJet PCIII or PCV and not a Power Vision, the auto tune capability of the PV has allowed me to develop an incredibly well performing tune for my Wide Glide with nothing more than a base map from FuelMoto and a bit of time spent in auto tune runs; a well done tune is a tremendous thing to have and if you don't believe you've got a tune you'd call 'amazing' it should be a priority.

After tuning with the PV my Wide Glide didn't run 'hot'; it was downright cool when compared to how she was in stock form but I wanted to try for an even cooler running bike so I added a Jagg low mount oil cooler. I've been monitoring engine and head temperatures with the Power Vision and there's been another big drop in temperatures; I'm quite confident when I move back to Florida this machine is now running as cool as I can make it.

A well tuned bike running as efficiently as possible should rank first, an oil cooler will be the icing on the 'cool runnin' cake. Only you know how your machine is performing; I can't speak highly enough for both the Power Vision and the Jagg cooler so I vote if you can, get both!

Thanks TinCupChalice I am going to get it tuned tomorrow. Maybe I can talk my wife into the cooler too.

I agree that a well tuned bike is priority 1, but even so, if you do stop and go riding in 112 degree temps, the CHT is going to get very high. Just try to keep the bike moving as much as possible.

HD Pilot you are right I will be mostly riding in the mountains when I get to California. If I end up stuck in traffic on the way, I will just get something cold to drink and wait out the traffic.

Agreed

One other nice thing when you add an oil cooler is temperatures start out lower, climb slower, and drop faster. I monitored engine and head temperatures with the Power Vision before and after I installed the oil cooler and you could see the difference in temperatures. Even slow movement forward dropped temperatures quicker than before the oil cooler was installed bringing the engine and head temperatures down from those high numbers... It really does make a difference.

linewatch, if you can get both the oil cooler and the tune done you'll be golden

If you are going with an oil cooler Jagg has a low mount with fan assist.
