Been riding for years, and have never experienced this problem, wondering if anyone else has, and what caused the problem.
Here's the deal, after I have been riding for about 30 miles, a fine mist, can't really even call it a mist, but a fog of oil, seems to make its way up and begins to cover my glasses. I say fog because thats what it almost looks like looking thru my glasses. I have to carry a small paper towel in my vest pocket, and wipe them clean, while on the road.
I have the screaming eagle backing plate and filter, I tightened all the screws, and cleaned the filter, same problem. There are no visable signs of an oil leak....so I'm lost...
When the bike is at idle, or for that fact when moving, there are no visable signs of smoke...the bike is running strong....I'm at lost on this one.....
Its an 01 Wide Glide with a little over 51K miles......
Harleys have a way of misting a little oil into the airfilter, especially with a performance setup. It usually makes its way into the air cleaner housing and onto exhaust....and also on the pants leg. This oil getting even near your face.....just ain't gonna happen.
What you are describing....uhm?
Blown fork seals.....highly possible
Water in the headlight....another possiblity, but slim
Leaky front brake leakage....possible
Was the bike recently rained on or did you recently wash the bike? Water can sometimes get into places and stay there for days....get your speed up and it can make its way onto your face.
This isn't water this is a fine fog oil........it started the end of last year.....and when I took it out this year it continued. I just replaced the screaming eagle filter with a K&N last night, haven't had a chance to take it our yet, but, since I just cleaned the filter, when I put in the K&N I checked the inside of the cover, and there were no signs of oil.....so I'm at loss for where this oil fog ? Mist? is coming from......
I don't believe its coming from the front end of the scoot.....as the haze forms on my glasses, it actually starts at the bottom, and works its way up till they are covered in this oil fog...
do you have the mist on the right side, on the pipes? likely is the famous HD misting problem. if so, do a search as there is a lot on this subject. i first noticed it on my WG after changing to a SE AC, but my son in law has it on his new sportster with nothing more than a K&N filter. put a AN BS on my UC and haven't had any problem thus far.
Or, you've changed hair dressing and are using that greasy kids stuff?
Wescoot2, I feel your pain, for I have the same problem and yes EVOrider it is happening with the oil mist. A few years back I installed hypercharger and that is when I believe my problems started, but not sure. Since then I have replaced the breather bolts, fuel lines and fittings, tried using less oil when I clean the K&N air filter, rerouted the vent line for the breather and nothing. I am down to pulling the rocker covers and check to see if an umbrella valve has stuck or gone bad. Good luck and please let me know if you find the problem.
