I'm sorry to say this but I think at least your going to need a stage 1 upgrade...buy getting the download and the stage 1 air cleaner you can use any evo style round cover or you can do what I did and just run a center ring leaving the filter element exposed...
Are you saying you just want to take the football cover off and run an open element (air filter). If so, sure...you can do it without mapping/tuning, etc. I took mine off and had no problem at all. Only thing I noticed was a little bit more valvetrain noise...because the football cover wasn't muffling that noise.
Not sure if this is what you're asking...but if it is, I did it...the dealer said it shouldn't make any difference...and a number of folks here said it shouldn't make a difference when I wanted to do it. That was all I needed to hear.
should have been more clear. i want to replace the football housing.get a round one, screaming eagle or another round type. not that much for performance, for looks. the added performance would be nice too tho .
I I have the SE air cleaner kit. I took off the football, and put on this one. It came off my '97 Wide Glide. I added translucent powedercoat over the chrome, and added the trim ring. For better air flow, I drilled some large holes on the bottom. I don't know if the holes made any differance or not, but it made me feel better.
I hated the old air cleaner covers on the last of the Shovelheads and the first of the EVO's. They sucked then and were just ugly. One hardly ever sees a bike with one of those anymore.
The twin Cam air cleaners are not my favorite either. However, they are still 100% better than those I just mentioned above. I think they look just a little too large for the engine compared to the round ones found on the EVO.
i put the screaming eagle aircleaner on last night. put a round evo cover on. i alsoinstalled the pcIII race tuner with the correct map on it at the smae time. everything i've been told says this is what you should do on a anf EFI bike. in your case, if you are running slip-ons, just put the aircleaner kit on and ride it to you closest dealer for the download. a couple miles won't kill your bike and it will save you money versus havig the stealer do it. I ran the pipes alone for about 150 miles, but upgraded the rest of it last night.
i hated the football too. way too big for the bike i had an evo before and just like the traditionalround aircleaner. i used a wrinkle black powder coated one from and evo night train.
