I was reinstalling my shift lever on my street bob, and the bolt snapped. You can see the break in the gap between the threaded and unthreaded portions of the bolt hole. I was thinking to drill the bolt with 1/4 in drill bit. Then try and thread tap using 5/16 18 tap. Any suggestions? The lever came back from powder and I think some powder got into the threading.
In the future when you get parts back from powder you may need to ream all non-threaded holes and tap all threaded holes. Sometimes powdercoaters will plug holes prior to powder coating and/or clean up the holes afterwards, but you have to talk to them about it beforehand.
You can drill it with your 1/4 inch drill. maybe enough will drill out just to retap it.
5/16-18 tap drill uses a letter F .256 dia drill. the 1/4 should work for you.
You can also try and heat the area up around the broken bolt until it is super hot, then melt wax onto the broken bolt and hopefully penetrate down the treads . When it cools ( you have to wait until it cools), sometimes the wax will provide just enough of a barrier to help remove it with a LH drill bit or extractor. Used this trick several times on automotive exhaust manifolds and headers w/ success. Good Luck.
The lever was mounted on the shaft, and I couldn't get a drill into the opening. Ended up breaking the lever. I have to cut the remainder off. Anybody sellin one cheap?

Kinda' defeats the purpose of having the part powder-coated doesn't it?
