Pulled the tank last night. Drained the fuel, dash off, fuel gauge out in all of 20 min or so. Let it air out overnight and dropped it off at the shop this morning.
Paint guy said he'll give me 4 coats of clear - I slipped him a 50 when I dropped it off - always felt that tipping before that kind of a job will give them the motivation to do the best job possible (i always hope...). Picking it up Sat AM.
I'll wait a week or so to put the badge on - going with a wide glide classic bar and shield badge. Simple and clean. Do you think a week is enough to let it cure before badging?
The other thing is that while we've had a nice string of high 60 deg days here, at night it drops to the 40's. It's a big garage that's probably around 55 all night anyway, but am I better keeping it up in my apt for a few days so its in steady high 60's temp for a better cure?
It's standard PPG paint using the vivid black code...
So going for simple, clean vivid black tank with the WG bar & shield? I dig making your bike look a little different than all the others! Can't wait to see pics!
I'm no paint expert but I say bring it in for the week and you should be good to go. Pick a room that stays pretty warm and dry if you can. If you are really worried about it go get a heat lamp from someplace like Lowe's and have that shine on it.

Yeah, I spent a little time mucking around with photoshop and different logos and thats the one I liked best... Proportions may be a bit off but this is what I'm expecting:
I can't speak to your question, but really looking forward to seeing the end result!
Yeah man, I've been dying to get rid of the red since I got her. But waiting a week in the middle of prime season would have been tough. But then, I love riding in the 50's which is what the next few weeks will be so.... Never a good enough time!

Yeah, a week will be fine. The painter probably baked it already anyway. He wouldn't have given it back to you if the clear was still soft. So technically you could put it on now. But sure, give it another week. The warmer the better. Paint will take much longer to cure in cool temps. It needs to be a minimum of 60 to doing any good at all. Just store it in the warmest area you can think of. BTW, I paint for a living, so I do have many years of experience behind me.
The painter should tell you but be sure to wait at least a month before any wax or detailer goes on it. Follow riches advice and the longer at room temp the better.
Yeah, it'll be getting cold at night here soon, so I'm going to to hang it in my living room (much to the chagrin of my girl) for a week. That way it'll be a steady 70. The garage is heated, but it'll probably be only 55-60 for the month or two it'll take to fully cure. Oh well, gotta ride...
I was poking around the internet and found some old school badges off older FXR's... Look really cool, but they only place that had them wanted $100 EACH!!! No f'n way. I'll keep searching, as I think the gold would look great. Not $200 great though...
Also, I found the perfect place for the tank to cure enough for me to badge it - in my office there's an electric room with our breaker panels, and... Two small transformers that keep the room at a toasty 90+ deg 24/7 - with no access. So I'll roll a small table in there and let her sit for the week before I put whatever badges on (yes, I'm actually considering the gold... sigh)
Which brings up another question. If the above badges are for a FXR, you think it will fit a dyna tank? I know they are curved, is why I ask.
And because this project is turning me into an OCD lunatic, here's a mockup of the gold badge. What do you think, gold or classic silver? (see a couple posts above for that mockup)
