Purchased the Live to Ride Derby cover for my 07 Low Rider. Also purchased the reccomended gasket. The OEM cover has an orange rubber O-ring and no gasket. The replacement has no O-ring, but uses a HD fullsize gasket. Seems odd, was this correct?
Also, during the replacement my Sears Torx bit broke at about 7 ft-Lbs on the torque wrench. The spec for the screws is 84-108 in-lbs = 7-9 ft/lbs.
Anyone know a source of strong Torx bits with for 3/8 drive Torque wrench?
They are all forged im sure - and any will do. Just make sure its the right size.Yours may just have been weak.I had to use an Impact driver to get 2 of my Derby cover Screws out. Thats a hella tight torque for those screws IMHO.
The gasket you need is a small frisbee looking thing that says on one side - " Place towards Clutch " In orange/red letters? Thats the one! Sounds like yours is the right one.
they do not have to be all that tight. a very small ratchet is all that is need. 1/4 inch drive will work fine. any larger, you will have bolts to tight for sure .
My guess - Sears stuff is made in China,
or some other third world country.
I do believe the replacement derby covers use the inferior flat gasket.

The stock cover is notched to use the o-ring type gasket. The LTR is not, therefor the use of the flat.
I had an 03 RK that had the O ring. The parts guy said HD changed to a gasket when swapping the cover because it would leak and trying to get the o-ring seated is a total pain in the ( I )! As far as the tork I can't help ya there.I changed the cover on my RG an it was a gasket alsonot an O-ring.
the HD gasket replaces the o-ring. Have replaced it on both bikes with no problems. also went down to Ace Hardward and bought chrome allen head bolts to replace the torx ones. those torx are a pain and if you aren't careful or do have a cheaper torx bit, it is easy to strip the bolt. no problemo with the allen heads. have had the derby covers off multiple times for servicing with no problem with stripping the head of the bolt.
